I’ve just started a new job south of the river and my office is situated on the Bedminster/Southville border(if there is such a thing). I asked where the nearest convenience store was(I think I said shop rather than convenience store mind) he said well, go out and hand a left and you’ll reach a Tesco Express or you can go out turn right and you reach a Tesco Express. Oh decisions decisions. I opted for the Tesco Express on the left(being a bit of a lefty I always go left when given the option, my nose piercing is on the left nostril, my tattoos are on the left hand side of my body and if lost, I always turn left — it ain’t foolproof but it gives me a mantra). So my journey took me to Tesco Express in Southville. It is what it is, Tesco Express. They have a cashpoint and a security guard and the staff seem to comprise two teenage boys. They have everything you’d need for a day, cereal, milk, sandwiches, soft drinks, groceries and booze though it can get quite busy.

A new Tesco Express is opening a little further afield on Cheltenham Road and is being met with a heavy hand of criticism. The Tesco Express on North Street proves just why the growth of more Tesco express stores is resulting in protests. It is a small, unnecessarily expensive store with a serious lack of stock. I went in for a newspaper, sandwich and a bottle of water and left the store £6 worse off. It is situated within a vast amount of newsagents and independent groceries so I wouldn’t recommend Tesco Express is you’re in the area. However, they stock the essentials if you are in a hurry and don’t mind spending a bit extra.

For such a big building, this Tesco Express is surprisingly small. Moreover, it stocks a shamefully limited amount of produce, most of which is overpriced. Given the large number of newsagents and independent corner shops in the vicinity, you would have thought Tesco Express might have been a bit more competitive. This, however, hasn’t been the case. So you now have every reason to support your local newsagents’. Oh, and don’t even think about buying alcohol from this joint — the selection is minimal and it’ll cost you the earth. Instead, pop across the road to Budget Boozer for an extensive range of alcohol, all at bargain prices.
