This Victorian pub is a reet good find and a great city centre watering hole. And although it is on perhaps one of the ugliest roads in Bristol it boasts a really nice patio back garden which actually feels really peaceful for those late afternoon drinks. I first started coming here for work lunches and found the staff to be really accommodating and funny. There’s often a bit of banter when you are buying your drinks. And although the food is your standard, non fussy, pub fare, it is really good value and always served with a smile. They do classics like chicken and beef burgers, paninis, baked potatoes. It being the type of pub it is there are always some old soaks at the bar who look like they may become fossilised at any second but they mean no harm.

It’s easy to walk past this pub and dismiss it instantly, but this is actually a bit of a find. So much so, that the journalists from the Bristol News and Media building across the way are deserting the marginally closer Stag and Hounds in favour of the Punch Bowl. The food is cheap and tasty and doesn’t take too long to arrive, the drinks are equally as cheap and tasty and you shouldn’t find yourself queuing too long in here. But the icing on the cake it the suntrap of a beer garden out back. You wouldn’t think it from looking at the slightly drab exterior at the front but the Punch Bowl has one of the nicest beer gardens in this part of town. The bar staff are always really friendly and although you may have to clamber over the odd professional drunk to get into this pub I’d say it’s well worth checking out.

There is a strong emphasis in the Punch Bowl on the quality of food served, this is evident in the business they recieve on Sunday for the lunches! The pub is a deceptivley large iside and decorated very well, you will feel pretty relaxed inside, weather it’s having a nice Sunday lunch or coming in for a lunchtime pint(don’t worry… no one will tell your boss! he’ll probably be in there having a pint and a cigarette in the beer garden!) Near to temple meads it’s a popular stop off for the commuters if the strong urge to head home hasn’t bitten them when they finish work.

Recently renovated. Best of the group of four pubs at the end of this road. Great sun trap beer garden at the rear. Friendly staff.
