We had some visitors to entertain on a Sunday in April, earlier this year, so taking them out for lunch seemed like a good option. We decided to come here as another review site(gasp, yes, I looked at another one!) had recommended it. Booked in several days in advance, thinking it was likely to be busy, which when we got there, it was. I can’t remember quite why or what happened, but when we initially went to the bar I got the impression they weren’t that interested in serving us. I think it might have been because we’d been given a table inside, but as it was unseasonably warm and sunny we’d asked to sit outsidebut who knows. However, that soon dissipated when we got our table, and sat down and relaxed, taking in the scenery and watching a territorial swan attack canoeists. Simple pleasures ;) As I’ve said, it was a lovely day, and consequently it was very, very busy with most of the outside tables being takenso I’d anticipated maybe being ‘forgotten about’ after that initial frostiness. Butour order was taken promptly and efficiently, and when the food came, it was plentiful, well cooked and very tasty. After dinner we went for a stroll along the riverbank, and despite it being virtually underneath one of the busiest bridges in Bristol(the dual-carriageway ringroad goes over it), that’s so far overhead that you really wouldn’t know it. It’s a really pleasant little spot down there. There’s a bit of a hair-raising aspect to getting there, as it’s down a fairly precipitous single track road and people seem to have a habit of hurtling along it, not anticipating what might be coming the other way, but I guess that just adds to the fun :) Just one more minor thing rankled a bit. I’ve no objection to people bringing their dogs along and sitting outside with them as it’s the ideal place to sit, chat and break a journey, but people eat at those tables, so I was annoyed at the woman who allowed her small dog to walk all over the table next to us.

Really cosy pub we came here at the weekend and it was very busy with walkers and their dogs popping in for a quick pint and a warm up. Full Sunday lunch menu was available but we were with a christening party and had a very tasty buffet. Apparently it’s heaving in summer with various festivals on so I’m hoping to come back then!

This is, one of my Favorite Pubs in Bristol. Traditional, and they pull a pint with the best. Driving here is a bit Fun, if traffic is on the one-lane road through the stones. This is a must. Careful as you try to leave the mens room, you might just get dropped outside!

If you’re a tourist looking for the ye olde English kind of pub then the Old Lock & Weir is ideal as it boasts three hundred years of histiry, pre dating the time the riveer became navigable. It has something of an odd layout inside(odd for contemporary times) as it has the main flagstone bar up a flight of stairs, whilst downstairs houses three smaller sized«drinking rooms». The food as you’d expect is very English and traditional, and is all freshly sourced and cooked to order. Moving outside of the pub itself you’ll find a great heated patio area which has fantastic views along the river’s edge. This pub has bags of charachter and charm. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon lunch and great when the weathers fine sitting by the bank of the river.
