Great food in here, my butt was in a sling for a fortnight after having the lamb madras and an onion bhaji here, also quoffed a couple of bottles of wine EXCELLENTO

Oh! Calcutta! is a modern take on an old Indian Restaurant. Decorated in red (I preferred it when it was shocking pink) with copious helpings of stainless steel the look of the place is very progressive. When you augment this with lcd flat screens, neon signs and projections onto the walls, there would be nothing to suggest that this has anything to do with an Indian Restaurant, other than the name.
I ate here a couple of times when it was quite new and considered it to be laid back /​bohemian in management style, and so made allowances for the slower than usual service on the basis that everything felt so relaxed. But having eaten there quite recently I noticed that much has changed with the colour. The TV’s were on, with the volume so loud that I had to yell at my friends to be heard. We asked the waiting staff to turn it down, but this only made a marginal difference.
The food, as always, was good, but the evening was ruined. You don’t expect to have to compete with a live broadcast of a football match whilst eating dinner in ‘good food guide’ recommended restaurant! The fact that they only reduced the volume slightly is rather telling in itself, but the fact they had it on in the first place speaks volumes. I won’t be going there again… especially now that we’re entering world cup season!

This place doesn’t look like your typical Indian restaurant. It has none of the heaviness in its décor, and instead it’s brightly coloured and stylishly modern, almost more like a café-​bar than an Indian restaurant. The menu, however, is fairly typical — with all the usual suspects and a few more unusual dishes besides. They mark on the menu which items are mild, medium or hot, which is helpful, and the dishes I’ve tried have been tasty and, as is always the case with Indian, very filling.
What I really like about this place though is the staff: they’re always really welcoming and engaging, and their service is fast and efficient. Food-​wise, however, my loyalty still lies with a couple of other Bristol Indian restaurants: the Sheesh Mahal and Ganesha.

Oh! Calcutta is located near the bottom of Gloucester Road. It is a modern Indian restaurant which serves your standard Indian curries and a couple of slightly rarer dishes for those wishing to broaden their culinary taste buds. As far as I am aware they don’t do a takeout service.
Inside, it’s clean and modern with plenty of tables spare most nights. The staff are very warm and friendly, and most importantly the service is very efficient. I would say this is a definitely a place to bring someone special as the staff really do go all out for you. Definitely try the Mango Lassi as its amazing!

This place is aiming itself at the more upmarket restaurateur as the prices aren’t your typical 6 or 7 pound for an Indian dish, they a more in the 11 or 12 pound region, which is fine if the food warranted it, but sadly it doesn’t.
Oh Calcutta, looks quite young a hip from the outside and the stylish décor is continued into the interior, with bright red paint and Bollywood films projected onto the walls. This sets it apart from your typical curry house, but what they seem to have overlooked is the produce they are cooking with. The chicken I had was dry and overcooked and the sauce was tasteless and greasy.
The service isn’t great either. The one time I was there they had a football match on and they refused to turn it down. Not what I was expecting from somewhere with such a good reputation.

I wasn’t sure about the modern interior for an Indian restaurant, it is almost like a coffee house in styling, but once you are sat down it feels like any other restaurant but with a window to watch the crazy Stokes Croft world roll by.
I have only been here when it has been deathly quiet but it does pick up at the weekends so make a booking if there are a few of you.
The staff are really friendly and the food was lovely — getting as hot as my Teflon-​throated companions wanted — but nothing so different that pulls me across town to come back here often. A good choice if you are in this part of Bristol though.

With bright red walls and metal seating, this isn’t your typical Indian restaurant. It feels, brisk, modern and a bit flash. There certainly isn’t the slight stale, dead feeling you get at some Indian restaurants. They’ve got a few candles though and it’s nicely lit, so all the metal doesn’t make it seem too sterile.
A reasonably adventurous menu, though you’ll still find chicken tika massala and the other usual suspects. It’s about nine pounds for a main and some rice. Probably a bit more than you’ll pay for a take away, but I’d say worth it for a smart convivial setting. The foods generally of a slightly higher quality than your typical takeaway as well. Helpfully they put spiciness ratings next to the dishes, which I recommend you heed. Oh! Calcutta! takes a slightly different approach than your usual Indian and is much the better for it.

Funky looking place with red walls, a slightly canteen-​like feel and bollywood movies projected on the walls — all of which I liked. We actually had a nice starter of poori here. But the main dishes were greasy and unpleasant tasting. Even under the nasty sauces, chicken was dry and tasteless, while my husband’s veggie curry seemed to be based on cheap cubed frozen veg. Left us feeling quite unpleasant. One to avoid.

Ohh Gosh. Noway recommended.
Observations:
a) They need to change the songs they have been playing from years now. lol!!!
b) They must be kidding, The price certainly does not match ambiance, so much noise and late service.
c) It’s typical Bangladeshi food, no where near Indian food
d) Meat/​chicken quality (Which no body notices generally) needs lot of improvement

My wife and I visited Oh Calcutta around December 30^th. It’s a place she liked to visit when she lived in Bristol. I was going to get a fish curry — but they were out of fish, and I ended up with a chicken bhuna (I think — it was the bengali-​style sauce with chicken). It was really tasty. The place had a nice vibe, and I thought my companions’ food was nice as well. Next time I’m in Bristol I hope to make it here.
Nothing to complain about. It’s a nice place to eat.

My favourite Indian restaurant in the whole country, I really cannot explain how good the food is and how welcoming the staff are, especially the owner who always takes time out to ask how i am doing whilst i wait for the excellent food. The food may seem a little pricey at first however the curries do include rice which makes them great value especially considering the portion sizes. I would heartily recommend a Lamb Rogan Josh and Garlic Naan to quench any hunger.

Really incongruous combination of super slick interior design and Indian food but it certainly works and marks this place out as a unique take on a familiar cuisine. For me the departure from Curry House chic loosened up my expectations and I was able to depart from a predictable choice of veggie balti and a garlic naan. And I’m glad I did because every dish me and my dining companions had was flavourful and fresh. I can’t remember the names but had a great selection of starters that departed from the usual samosas and bhajis. A very great start to the meal.
The service was friendly and prompt, which rounded out a good experience.

I lived just round the corner from Oh Calcutta! for a long time and only first ventured there just as I was about to move away! However it is a fantastic Indian where the food is great and not too overly pricey. The great thing abou ttheir menu is that you can pick your sauce and your meat/​fish/​vegetarian option so you can have pretty much any combination you want. They also have a great selection of side dishes as well as all the usual breads and rices. The food is fantastic, although can take a little time to come (a good excuse to drink some fine indian beer!) and the atmosphere is really modern and comfortable. The only thing I will say is that I have tried to go on a friday and saturday evening without a booking — never do this as you wont stan d a chance of getting a table!

A contemporary take on the traditional curry house, this funky chrome and neon restaurant does away with the flock wallpaper to great effect.
The vibe befits the décor with a young Gloucester Road crowd. The menu sticks to (Anglo-)Indian traditions however, which proves to be a wise move as all the dishes I’ve sampled have delivered on taste and quality. Worth a visit if you want something a bit different from a curry restaurant.

After a frustrating hour of trying to find an Indian that delivered, we decided to go the two minutes walk to pick up a takeaway from Oh Calcutta! And it certainly wasn’t a mistake, it was very very tasty. Reasonably priced especially if you minus the rice, that all the dishes come with, I’m looking forward to eating in next time!

Very close to «The Arches» on Gloucester Rd is a very funky-​looking Indian restaurant called Oh! Calcutta. It looks like it belongs in Amsterdam, Berlin, or other trendy European hotspot, with red walls, dim lighting, contemporary furniture and large windows.
Oh! Calcutta prices are above average, but are well worth it as a treat, especially the milder dishes such as Makhani, and the house specials from the chalk board. Service is friendly and quick unless it is very busy.
Worth checking out.

This differs from many curry houses in the sense that it has it’s own unique style.
It is very modern and very cosy, with very dark lighting and candles on every table.
The staff are very relaxed and friendly, and unlike some other indian restaurants, let you get on with your meal without interruption.
There is plenty of options with a specials board. The main meals have rice included which makes this very good value for money.
Being in its out of town location it is never too busy, so you can expect a relaxed dining experience with good food and nice colorful surroundings.

This modern and trendy take of a curry house offers a warm, funky, and relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food. Along with a full menu and extensive specials board for eat in or takeaway.
