I really love parks, way more than the seaside, if I never had another grain of sand stuck between my toes I would not be bothered, but take away parks and I wouldn’t know what to do! This park isn’t the biggest one you’ll find in Bristol but it is very leafy and is loved by many in the St Werburghs area and beyond. In terms of what makes it a little different you may enjoy the authenticity of the original Victorian cast-iron urinal in one corner, there is a small playground and an area that allows for basketball /football fun and games.

When I first moved to the area some years ago, this somewhat small park could seem almost dodgy at times, with its fair share of cider-swilling louts late at night. But in recent years it has transformed into a vibrant community space and is wonderfully family friendly. Mature oak trees and a beautiful Victorian-style public loo line the avenue at one side, while the bubbling river sweeps through from the other side, with its fair share of wildlife. The park is always full of dog-walkers and parents out for a stroll with their children and there is a good, safe play area at one end. It also hosts various art shows, outdoor cinema screenings by Indymedia and craft stalls. Always a pleasurable detour.

Midway between St Pauls and the M32 out of Bristol sits the sleepy district of Bristol, St Werburghs. Not a lot is known about this merry little place packed full of colourful vans, nice takeaways and green spaces — until you start to explore. Mina Road Park is an excellent place to begin your exploration and in a relatively small space such as this you can find quite a lot. My favourite feature has to be the abundance of marvellously large oak tress possibly hundreds of years old. It’s wonderful to sit in the leafy groves on a sunny day and guess the things they’ve seen appear and disappear. There’s an enormous array of wildlife here too from newts and frogs, to dragonflies and sticklebacks in the daytime and bats and owls and night. With two quintessential bridges straddling the river as it curls round the perimeter and a bright and colourful play area this park is fantastic for children.
