Good, straightforward chippy. The fish is excellent and the chips are a high standard.

The Kellaway Fish Bar is the most amazing fish n chip place in Bristol, no– the world, nope, the universe!!! It really is that good! It has won countless awards and these certificates are proudly displayed all over the walls, so you know even before your food arrives that it is going to be especially yummy. The fish, chicken, sausages and chips are all delicious and so, so cheap! Only £1.30 for large chips, and the portions are huge! The only thing I wasn’t too keen on was the fish tank at the front of the shop… looking at the fishes’ happy faces made me feel a little guilty about eating their friends. Oh well… when fish is this good, guilt is a burden I can bear.

Fish and chips — what else could you want? The winning combination surely. Winning is the buzz word here with more awards and certificates adorning the walls than you can shake a frozen fish at. For good reason too, these guys know what they’re doing. Another family business in this stretch of independents they’ve had many years to hone down the perfect recipe knocking out fish that isn’t too crunchy or too soft and chips that are just right — chunky and not greasy. It may sound over-the-top going into such detail but when you do treat yourself to fish and chips, it’s got to be a good one. With mushy peas, pickled onions and some equally delicious pies to boot — Kellaway Fish Bar is well worth the visit and well deserved of all its awards.

Fish and chips usually means something greasy, soggy, and probably a bit limp. Kellaway Fish Bar, however(though it might not look it from upstairs), is a step above your usual chippy, and have tried to take things a little bit up-market. It’s certainly not avant garde cuisine but is much better quality than I’m used to. The many awards on the wall are certainly deserved They still have the virtues of a more typical chippy. Big, juicy, saliva inducing chips come in mountainous portions and the prices aren’t too bad. The cod’s good but they have plenty of other battered offerings as well. They do a brisk trade which means your food is unlikely to have been sitting underneath the heater for hours. All in all, a first class chippy.

This has won a fair handful of rewards over the years, and quite rightly so. You could think of it as a gastro fish and chip place — it’s fish and chips without all the greasy horribleness that comes as standard in almost all the other joints you can think of. They have a good menu, including burgers and chips, pies, and obviously the fish options. I always go for what it’s meant to do, fish and chips, but I’ve been given equally fine reports for the other options. Due to its location, it’s not all that well known, catering primarily to the residential area it’s situated in, but it’s well worth a little trip off your beaten track to sample the goods and see what all the awards are about.
