Flour & Ash is a naughty little pizza joint where they know what they’re doing. They’ve got the mad skills. Mad skills. General ambiance — friendly, inclusive, not at all snobbish about their pizza(although they could afford to be if they wanted to, given the quality). Friendly + unobtrusive staff, but make sure you book way in advance(a week in advance) as it gets fully booked for busy times. For this joint, because the pizzas are so good, I would recommend sharing a few pizzas(say, 2 between 3) so that you get a sample of the range. More variety. We went for the spinach, egg and black olive one and the 3 cheeses. The spinach one was ace. Every bite tasted different. The crust wasn’t too doughy, which is often a problem with these pizza places — you feel like you’re consuming a whole loaf of bread along with your pizza. It was actually JUICY, which is not an adjective I have ever used to describe a pizza before. Summary: ‘…and it was good.‘ The ‘Three Local Cheeses’ one was also very decent. I like the idea of a 3, not 4 cheeses. That’s all Flour & Ash need. You could see and taste all the individual cheeses, too. It wasn’t just one conglomerated cheesy mess. The pizza is strong in this one.

Wow the pizza here is so nice, tried to go here a fee times but they were always booked up. The food is really simple but good selection and tastes really good, I had the black current ice cream, just right and not too sweet. I would recommend this place, but better book ahead to get a table !

It was a sticky Saturday afternoon, we hadn’t eaten all day and, by jove, we were ravenous. After wandering for a while we decided a decent pizza was in order. Fortunately, Flour & Ash was nearby. The place is light and comfortably spaced, good for a large group — we were six — and also suitable for couples. I’m not a big drinker but others in my party noted a terrific selection of tasty local beers. I enjoyed a sea bass ceviche for a starter; having been to Peru, I found it as delicious and zingy as any in Lima. Plus, the accompanying freshly baked sourdough slices boded extremely well. Now, the pizza. They’ve an excellent deal where all pizzas are £9 before 6.30. Naturally I went for a pricey one that comprised speck, artichoke and an egg, normally £13. If you like your meat, there are also pulled pork and lamb pizza options, although lamb isn’t included in the £9 deal. The pizzas aren’t the best I’ve had, but they are better than most. Excellent fluffy, crispy dough. Perhaps too much olive oil for my taste, and I had to add a fair amount of salt. For afters, there are some unusual sorbet and ice cream flavours. We tried the date and toffee, which was not too sweet, in a good way. We were there for a couple of hours and the staff were just the right level of attentive. A most relaxing way to spend the afternoon. Recommended.

You could easily pass these place and not see it, it Looks like a small shop from outside but inside has a small resturant atmosphere with very friendly staff. Went here as a group booking and we did take up half the resturant. It was abit slow first of all with sorting out the staff to come round to take drink orders. But once we had our drinks we then ordered. I shared a the chorizo pizza with my partner which was yummy. The pizzas came out in 4’s as the pizza oven could only take that many at a time but they came out quickly i thought. The pizza bread sourdough and was really nice. Its just how i like it not too think or not thin :) The menu is very basic and would maybe nice to have some specials. The whole of my group complemented the food. Overall had a lovely experience and happily go back again to try the other pizzas on the menu as they sounded gert lush.

I recently made my first visit to Flour & Ash for my partner’s birthday. We wanted a place that was a bit different, can cater for big groups and was casual for the start of the night before going to a few bars. After considering a couple of options Flour and Ash seemed like it met the criteria. I provisionally booked a table for 10… After 4 phone calls and gradual increases the table number became 20! The guys there were happy to accommodate but did warn that it was the absolute max, as would take up half the restaurant and due to the set up of 1 stone bake pizza oven the food would have to come out in stages. Table booked. I’d had a look at the website prior to booking and they had some extremely intriguing pizza’s on the menu all with a contemporary twist such as the pizza I eventually chose; ox cheek with béchamel sauce and parmesan. All the pizzas are made with sourdough, cooked in the pre-mentioned stone bake oven, which is an absolute beast by the way! If you’re after a desert there’s a simple choice of locally sourced ice creams that have various different flavours, some a little off kilter like rice pudding and nutmeg! The restaurant is decorated light and minimal with long benches through the middle which catered for our large group and smaller tables up each side. The place has a modern feel to it. You can see right in to the kitchen where the centrepiece of the giant stone bake oven is flaming. A number of us went for the ox cheek pizza and all thought it was amazing, genius! In fact everyone enjoyed their pizzas. Other highlights included the beef fillet, horseradish & rosemary and the chorizo, pickled chillies & rocket. There’s also an excellent selection of beers and ciders on offer which I sampled quite a few of! The chocolate milkshake Wiper & True stout was a winner! Service wise the restaurant did struggle a little with the large group. However this is totally understandable as they had said at the outset that it was a push to cater for 20 and due to the kitchen set up the website clearly states pizzas may come out at different times. We had a little trouble paying at the end of the meal as there was a problem with the till, so we had to hang around for a bit. But there’s always going to be teething problems with a new restaurant and I guess this can’t really be helped any way. All in all definitely recommended, if anything maybe for a slightly smaller group. I’ll be back. Thanks for accommodating Flour & Ash!

I love pizza! I love Gloucester Road. I love Flour and Ash! It’s been a while since I’ve found a small pizza place that I’ve absolutely loved. There’s a few good places to ‘grab a slice’ in Bristol, but none quite like Flour and Ash. The restaurant is intimately small, with really nice, large windows and a row of tables against each wall and a row a bigger tables through the middle of the restaurant. Now, the pizza. OMG, the pizza! I was lucky enough to go with a few people, so I got to try a slice of a few, but the stand outs for me was the Ox Cheek and the Filler Steak. The Ox Cheek had a béchamel base with Ox cheek and parmesan, which was surprisingly amazing. It wouldn’t have been something I normally went for, as it didn’t have tomato base, but I saw it on a recent blog post so had to try it. When I go again I’ll try something else, but I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn’t been before. The fillet steak pizza was HUGE! The tomato base was absolutely delicious and the steak was perfect; not at all fatty or gristly! They sell lots of local beers and ciders and they actually had one of the best malbecs I’ve ever tasted. If you like red wine, you seriously need to try it. Flour & Ash? BIG fan!

This is my first visit to flour and ash and on the whole I would say it was a good one. The pizza are all severed on a sour dough base and and are absolutely gorgeous !! My girlfriend and I shared two pizzas we had a chorizo and pickled chilli and a oz cheek and béchamel sauce topped with Parmesan. They were a decent size and the ox cheek one was bloody fantastic !!! The staff wee a friendly bunch even if the did struggle with the size of our group(20 +) but any restaurant of this size would struggle with a group of that number. I would defiantly return to flour and ash and give it a second go but maybe with a maximum of 4 people

My first trip to Flour & Ash was for my sisters birthday, we were a large group of 20+ and not exactly a quiet bunch either. However, the staff were lovely and really did well to accommodate all of us especially as it’s quite a small restaurant and they told us we had a limit of 18 people! The restaurant is neutral colours, canteen style tables, chairs and benches and there is a nice feeling about the restaurant. We were told that they could only cook 4 pizzas at a time in the traditional pizza oven, well this actually made our evening a little more fun and we all shared whoever was lucky enough to get their pizzas first. I ordered the spinach pizza with olives, anchovies and a fried egg. It was delicious! The yolk of the egg was lovely and runny, the dough was delicious and all the other ingredients were really tasty. Also managed to acquire a couple of slices of the ox cheek pizza, which had a béchamel sauce. OMG, this was complete heaven. I would highly recommend this. One of the best pizzerias I have been to and I will definitely be going back, just with a smaller group and those people better be willing to swap slices with me so I get to taste more of the delicious pizzas and not just my own.

We went to flour & ash for a friends birthday in a huge group of 22 of us. It’s only small so we took up most of the restaurant and they had warned us that the traditional pizza oven only takes 4 pizzas at a time so we would get our pizzas staggered. But oh wow, it was worth waiting for. I was torn between the Ox cheek and the fillet steak but I made the right choice with the steak(I pinched a bite of the Ox cheek and it was delicious but the fillet steak was next level!). The steak was pink and all the flavours just really worked. I’d go as far as saying it was the nicest pizza I’ve ever had! The décor is plain but in a cool way. Nice lighting, you can see through to the kitchen and there’s benches and plastic chairs(but cool ones) to sit on. It’s quite small and maybe caters for 40 but the staff were so friendly, and to be fair we were being a bit of a pain in the backside and paying for our drinks separately! I would defo go back in a smaller group and could eat the steak pizza all day long!

We came here with a group of friends for my birthday. Now we were awkward from the word go, firstly we booked the table for 10 people however this grew and grew, to being 21 I think. Now they were very honest from the start, admitting they may struggle with the large group as the pizza oven will only take 4 pizzas at a time. They did accommodate us, but wanted £100 cash deposit to hold the table, fair enough I suppose. The décor is modern and open plan, you can see through to the kitchen and pizza oven which looks amazing(I want one). The staff were really friendly and let us order and pay for drinks individually at our tables, and despite there being a few hiccups(the till crashed, and some leaking pipes) the staff sorted it out and most people were none the wiser. I ordered the Ox cheek and Béchamel sauce pizza, I had heard many good things about it and well, it was probably the best pizza I have ever eaten. Served on a sour dough base it was really light and not too stodgy, yummy! The topping was so tasty, on my next visit I’ll find it difficult to try something else on the menu, cause I want to eat this again and again. I love Flour and Ash, I’ll definitely be going back perhaps with a smaller group next time so you can really take it all in.
