Flinty Red! Four of us dined there last week. I’d pretty well agree with the previous reviews. It’s a bit unusual in that I think some people may struggle with the menu which you could call eclectic. Bit of a halfway house between for carnivores and for vegans perhaps. Extensive wine list reflecting the association with Corks of Cotham, a very nice wine shop indeed. I liked the small cosy layout which contributed to a buzzy ambience. Food isn’t a bad price but with a few reasonable wines it’s not hard to rack up £50 per person with service. Recommended and we’ll be back.

It’s rare that I go to a restaurant and find myself wanting literally everything on the menu. There was not a single dish that I wouldn’t have ordered had I a belly big enough. We even came very close to ordering seconds of a fantastic beetroot pasta. The staff here are thoroughly charming — friendly without getting in the way. They were happy to recommend things and obviously enjoyed what they were a part of. That really helped us enjoy our meal. The food is tapas style. That is to say that it’s all small plates that are perfect for sharing. Often when you order small plates you end up with a table full of food slowly going cold and nowhere to put your drink down. Here the pace of food delivery was judged well and we never had more than a couple of dishes on the table at once and were able to enjoy everything at the right temperature. My one regret is not having more wine. The restaurant is run by the wine merchants up the road and so have a pretty good wine list. The waiters have obviously been given some good training on the wine and will freely recommend you something to your taste. The last great thing about the restaurant was the atmosphere. This place was just the right size that it felt really buzzing without being intrusive. I really just loved my meal there.

Linked to the fantastic Corks of Cotham off licence just a few doors down, Flinty Red is a much welcome addition to the Cotham Hill crew. A lovely little restaurant with a romantic intimate feel, it inevitably attracts a lot of couples. It looks fresh and new and the menus change often enough to make repeat visits worthwhile. It also works with Corks of Cotham to create an interesting events list of taster evenings and wine dinners. During these they will match dishes to red, white, rose or sparkling wine as well as beer or rum and whisky if you’d prefer. Their wine dinners tend to focus on a specific winemaking region and while a little more expensive(at £60 a head) than your standard meal in Flinty Red, are perfect for a special occasion. Check out their website to see the full events programme.

A really interesting concept in amongst the endless chain restaurants of Whiteladies. The food is fantastic — mainly small plates/tapas style, with some larger dishes. It’s predominantly European/Mediterranean, but all the choices are unusual and well thought out. Wine is sold both by the glass and the bottle and the selection is incredible as well as being of great quality. The staff, especially the somellier, are very knowledgable. On top of all this, it’s not particularly pricey. The only downside is the layout inside the restaurant — it’s pretty tiny with a handful of tables cramped together. Because of this, it can get really noisy. You won’t find anything else like this in the area and I highly recommend you give it a try

This teeny tiny restaurant in Clifton Village is the place to go if you want fine food and even finer wine. This is perfectly situated on posh Cotham Hill, just a couple of doors along from Corks of Cotham. As you enter the smell of hearty red wine and garlic from the kitchen fills your senses and gives you a taste of what’s to come. As well as the delicious food on offer, my favourite part of my evening in Flinty Red was speaking to the knowledgeable waiters about which wines go with which food. Not only were they friendly and helpful but I began to share their passions for the finer stuff(having previously been a fan of the cheapest plonk on the supermarket shelf).

This is a small and well presented eating and drinking space in the posh Clifton Down area of Bristol. The menu is simple and tasty, my personal favourite being the grilled prawns. They offer a fantastic range of wines to accompany your meal, which is delivered with slick and efficient service. As new year approaches, Flinty Red are offering to host your celebrations, with a full evening of eating and drinking for the price of £75, which does sound like a lot, but you’re guaranteed to be dining in style and comfort.

As Jon B. alludes to, Cotham Hill is a bit of a graveyard row. Shops and restaurants come and go here, with only a few managing to gain traction and endure. Flinty Red will survive though, I think. Corks of Cotham, the nearby independent wine merchants(also well worth a visit) are behind this restaurant, with the focus being on getting the perfect bottle to complement your meal. They’re passionate about wine here and will take the time and effort to make sure you get something you’re happy with. The food’s French and Spanish influeced and very much made to match the wine list(which with 100 choices really is comprehensive). The food is well sourced, with plenty of care and attention put in. Whilst you might end up spending a pretty penny of wine the food is reasonably priced, which means you can feel a bit less guilty for spending so much on drink. Not to busy at the moment, but still a decent atmosphere. Head here especially if you’re a wine afficienado, but even if you’re not.

This place has just opened in the past week, on Cotham Hill in a premises which is constantly changing hands, so it remains to be seen whether they’ll have more success here. It’s a joint venture between the owners of Corks of Cotham, the wine shop up the road, and two local chefs. The emphasis, therefore, is on good food with excellent wine choice — and the staff know their stuff on both. The food is both creative and high in quality, at affordable prices. They let you taste the wine before you buy — their passion is such that they’d probably rather you try everything than not enjoy a bottle of something. Very interesting, hot off the press and well worth a try, soon, before it becomes too busy to enjoy.
