Got hammered here last month, they have a fine array of ciders and I tried four until my memory went. Nice friendly bar staff, but the pub is very small and can get crowded. Bit of a smokey aroma coming from somewhere, that needs to be sorted out. Elmore says this is one of his favorite pubs in this part of Bristol and he is a fussy so and so

Great little pub on Cotham Road, the Cotham Porter Stores has a wide selection of reasonably priced beer and cider on offer. I wondered in here looking for a quick pint on a Sunday afternoon and was delighted to find some live music taking place. At this time of the day the pub was pretty quiet and the crowd that was there seemed to be mostly locals and old men, or perhaps that is one and the same thing?! The acoustic music was good but the afternoon was entertaining when the two blokes on stage started to be heckled by this old guy who obviously didn’t appreciate an acoustic version of Wonderwall. The situation did resolve itself before any punches were thrown but it would make me a little wary of coming in here on my own, although if I keep my musical opinions to myself then this wouldn’t be a problem.

My enduring memory of the Cotham Porter Stores will forever be of a Wednesday night in the midst of essay deadline madness, when my housemates and I popped out for ‘a drink’. That one drink turned into about seven and before we knew it, we were scraping our pennies together and wrestling off inebriated locals just for a chance to hear Whitney Houston’s ‘Dance With Somebody’ one more time. A local’s pub but a friendly one, Cotham Porter Stores offers good value house doubles which combined with relaxed closing hours and a cheerful atmosphere make for one of the city’s better traditional pubs.

I have only visited this pub once and I am sorry to say it wasn’t too great an experience. However, I am willing to admit that this might be because it was mid afternoon, mid week therefore it wasn’t exactly buzzing with excitment. There were mainly old men sitting at the bar drinking cider and not much else going on. I also didn’t like the fact that the toilets were outside so they were cold! They were also a little grimy and smelt quite a bit! I would however like to say that the barman was really pleasant and chatty which was nice. The cider was good and cheap(only £2 a pint) however it does feel like the place hasn’t had a good clean in a good decade. But then again, if your not someone who really cares that much whether or not a pub is sparkly clean then I can imagine this place livens up in the evening and could produce a decent night out.

Cider I up landlord! And make sure you put a slice of lemon in that. Squeeze through this long bar which will probably be full to find a table and order cider — everything else they do here is second-rate. Although avoid the Ben Cosshams cider as it is pretty much a liquid opal fruit. It is a bit dirty, it does have outside loos but it is friendly and loud so bring lots of friends. Check out the quiz question on the wall to your left opposite the bar — if you answer it you get a free pint!

I’ve been past a few times and heard something terrible blaring out, which put me off at first. However, soon discovered that this place is worth persevering with. The focus here is on cider, in true Bristol fashion, with a few different varieties on offer. People are relaxed, you might get a few drink addled grins, which is certainly better than the hostility you’ll find at some places. Charming or just a little bit basic, depending on your point of view, this isn’t the prettiest pub. With that said, they have a picture of a top hatted man on their sign that I really like. Worth knowing that it goes on for a bit at the back, so give it a look even if looks a bit full walking past. Cotham Porter Stores(I’m yet to find out the story behind the name) is good for a few afternoon ciders, probably don’t stay when they start putting on the music.

This place has always held a special place in my heart(and liver), though I’ve started frequenting it a lot less since I started to realise that drinking cider non-stop every Sunday didn’t make me quite the winner I once believed it did. Cider may have become more fashionable over the last few years, but these guys have been eating, sleeping and breathing the stuff for over a century. A proper old man’s pub, the main attraction is the attractive combo of cider and a slice. The main two are Thatchers and Cheddar, though they have regular guests on too, plus ales and lagers. Alas, it’s been taken over recently, so I’m not sure if a pint of rocket fuel still costs less than £2, or if you can still enjoy it alongside a takeaway from the local chippy. Indeed, I even heard a horrible rumour that they’ve started cleaning the tables occasionally…

The Cotham Porter Stores changed hands last year and is all the better for it, the landlord is young and funny. It concentrates on a variety of ciders and also sells some good pub grub– Pie Minster(pies) are the popular choice. It is quite small and if you want to smoke there is a small area out back which is uncomfortably placed near the toilets. Full of locals who are often well sauced on cider and happy to chat.
