Travel North from Bristol city centre for a couple of miles and things start to change rapidly. After upmarket Clifton and suburban Westbury-on-Trym you will come to Lawrence Weston. Thing’s are a bit more Bristolian here, with lots of old ladies pushing shopping trolleys and a much more distinctive accent to be found. There’s a little line of shops just off the road with a couple of local places, one of which is CBS bakeries. There’s a few loaves of bread, which is fresh every day. It’s more of a greasy spoon café really though. There’s various sorts of fried breakfast on offer, which all look like they’ll fur your arteries horribly. They’ve got pasties(of course) and sausages rolls in the heater, which are just what you need on a cold day. There’s baguettes too, which at 2.25 are fantastic value. About a foot long and stuffed with whatever you want, you’d probably spend at least another pound more for something like this in the centre. I also saw birthday decorations and candles, on sale, rather oddly, should you want to pick up any of these whilst you’re getting a loaf of bread. CBS bakeries is more a greasy spoon masquerading as a bakery, and one good reason to make a visit up to Lawrence Weston.
