‘Oscar award winning fish & chips’. You are perpetually reminded of this by the overwhelming plethora of accolades and awards plastered all over the interior and even exterior. Like most new customers, my expectations were high. The prices were great. For £2.60, you receive infinite chips: they never ended. Sauce was cheap too, as was the meat and fish. The quality of the chips was satisfactory. Nothing special. Although I would compromise quantity for quality in this scenario. However, the battered sausage was next level. It was quite possibly the best battered sausage I have ever, and ever will have. It was just so clean. Different to any I’d had before. The best analogy I can think of to articulate this, is the difference between takeaway Chinese and a nice Chinese restaurant. It’s the same food, similarly presented, but there’s just something classier about it. The staff were extremely friendly, which helps its reputation. The seating outside was a lovely addition, and the all-round presentation of the bar and even the food was assuring. 4/5, would recommend.

This busy takeaway has won all kinds of awards and in my view they are merited as it’s a genuinely high class establishment. As well as numerous other menu options you can get cod, haddock or plaice here; none of your generic fish’n’chips fish that probably lived its life at 20,000 leagues with a face like a gargoyle and a fluorescent fishing rod dangling off its head. The food is fresh, well cooked and nicely presented too; your meal comes in a sturdy cardboard box(no risk of it sogging through the bottom of the bag onto the pavement!) and they’ll offer you a lemon wedge and a disposable fork too. At £7.30 the Fish Supper gets you a large fish, chips, mushy peas, sauce, lemon wedge and a can of drink probably the nearest you’ll get in these parts to a meal from the late lamented Bristol Harry Ramsden’s.

Bishopston Fish Bar does what it says on the door. It makes traditional fish and chips for the discerning amongst us. They also do other take-away food, but despite best intentions, I’ve never tried it. I only ever visit them to get what they’re best known for. I’m not too partial to chips and would describe the ones here as being average, but the fish is better than most. It’s succulent and satisfying and the portions are good. Service is quick and the place is kept clean, making it functional rather than alluring. But seeing as it’s a take-away, this could hardly be considered a minus point. Pricewise it’s not the best buy in town, but I would rather pay extra for the quality of the fish. It’s just a shame that there’s not a park in easy walking distance where I could go to eat it straight out of the wrapper in time honoured tradition.

It surprises me that a city as large and diverse as Bristol has very few decent fish ‘n’ chip shops but Bishopston Fish Bar is one of the better ones. It can get quite busy during the evenings but that’s only because the freshly battered fish is worth waiting for. One of the best bits about fish ‘n’ chips is the added extras and there are plenty here including traditional favourites such as mushy peas and onion rings along with less traditional items like moussaka! There are takeaway menus and if you ring in advance you can skip the queue and have your order ready by the time you reach the shop(this normally takes no more than ten minutes for an order for two people). The food is fresh and the chips are the perfect mix of crispy and soggy, and you get plenty for your money! If you live near here then you should definitely give Bishopston Fish Bar a try.

I once acquired a free pir from Pieminster(down the road from here in Stokes Croft) and on my way back up Gloucester Road, I knew what I really needed to perfectly accompany my pie was some chips. Proper good chips, big thick ones, not silly little ones. I was nearing the top of Gloucester Road and thought I may have to do without, but this is when I discovered the Bishopston Fish Bar! Me and my colleague had a portion of chips between us(seen as we already had a pie on our plates) and when we got back to the office found the portion absolutley huge — it was enough to go round the whole office! They were pretty tasty too, not to soggy, or too crispy and not too greasy either. Near to perfect infact. I’m not sure I know a better place for chips on Gloucester Road — I haven’t yet tried the fish but it did look pretty good.

Nothing beats a gorgeous fish ‘n’ chips and I can think of no better place to indulge in quality food than in the Bishopston Fish Bar. I am quite fussy with chips and they have to be just to my liking. The chips served here are divine — well-cooked without being crispy, soft in the centre and bulky, served with loads of vinegar. I am not a fish fan so usually go for their chicken which is delicious. Bishopston Fish Bar is cheap as chips too — I’d recommend the cheesy chips for £1.20. There is a big selection of fish too so when you go back for more(which undoubtedly you will) you can make your next order a little different and be equally satisfied.

Contrary to its shabby exterior, Bishopston Fish Bar is a first class chippy. Not only do they serve three different sizes of cod, but they also sell plaice, scampi and haddock too. Oh, and not forgetting the Moussaka! With regard to quality, you should expect only the finest tasting food here, served in a sturdy little cardboard box. And if quantity is more your thing, you can also expect very generous portions of whatever it is you order. Perhaps, though, it is good service that really floats your boat? Then you’ll be pleased to know that staff are smiley and accommodating. What more could one ask for?

Now if your on the look out for a tasy piece of fish and chips, then this is the place. The chips are always done to perfection, and are very crispy, as is the fish batter. The fish itself is very moist, and not dry like alot of other fish bars. They do a wide variety of takeaway meals as well, but the fish is why you should check this place out. The staff are polite, which is a nice thing nowadays. 4 star establishment.

This fish and chips provide lovely, delicious food for not too much money. Their pieces of fish is very nice and their batter is crisp.
