Alterego is exactly how a sports bar should be, not all neon signs and cheesy American styling. It has a warm atmosphere yet has screens nearly everywhere you look. They show such a variety of games that if you team is playing then there is a good chance they are showing it. On a Saturday they will have many games on in an afternoon — when I last went they had four football games on, a rugby game and we also got Sky Sports News put on in another room. There’s a good range of lagers but limited amount of ale which is a shame but only a small downside for many other pluses. There is a function room which is available for free and has its own separate bar and toilets. It’s upstairs at the back so it feels nice and private. The place is a bit of a tardis and has lots of separate spaces so you can enjoy your friend’s company without feeling part of one big group. On a Monday they do «toss the boss», flip a coin and if you win you only pay half price for your drink. It has certainly kept me in there longer than I planned in the past. They’re also pretty flexible, I’ve been in with my kids when it’s been quiet and we’ve had the top room to ourselves while watching the football — they even let us bring in our own food as they only offer crisps and nuts. Nice flexible guys running a great bar. Keep up the good work!

Another trend-led bar on Whiteladies Road but this one does have a little more to offer, especially if you are a sports fan. Always popular over the weekends, Alterego shows pretty much every popular sport ever invented, particularly football — the cheers from fans can be heard from across the street on Saturday afternoons. It’s quite tricky to categorise this bar as it is popular with sports fans, students and those looking for a quick pint after work. There are regular drink deals throughout the week but on Mondays you can flip a coin for every round you order and if you guess correctly, your next round is on the house. The whole bar can be hired out for events and if you have a large group then make a beeline to the back of the bar down some stairs where there is plenty of seating and comfy leather sofas.

Alterego is great fun, down to earth bar situated along Whiteladies road which is geared towards a largely student audience. For starters its in a Brilliant location, near by all the other trendy bars Whiteladies has to offer, and has a great atmosphere that you notice as soon as you walk in the door. In my opinion there are two great things about this bar. Firstly, they have a Ninetndo Wii that you can play on with your friends — what a great idea for extra entertainment! And secondly, every Monday night Alterego have a ‘heads or tails’ evening where you order a round of drinks and then flip a coin, and if you guess the outcome then you get another of the same round for free! What a brilliant incentive to order drinks! The layout is quirky with an upstairs balcony-type area with seating, and there’s more seating around the bar downstairs. Drink prices are fairly average, unless you go on Monday night and try your luck! I would definitely recommend this bar to friends, and it’s a regular hotspot that my friends and I visit for pre-drinks before a night out!

Probably the best football pub in the world. Literally no matter what game you want to watch they’ll be showing it. Although it looks like more of a ‘wine bar’ don’t be fooled, if you want to watch the game(football or rugby) with your mates and get some decent banter with fans of the team that isn’t yours, head here on a Saturday afternoon. The staff are friendly and accommodating and that’s probably why they seem to attract a lot of regulars, which is what you want from a pub. You can always see a screen! And there’s nothing worse than finding a pub showing the game you want to watch and not only struggling to find a place to sit but with a decent view of a screen. You will not have this problem here. There are big screens everywhere, and in between those big screens there are smaller screens to fill the gaps. If you go upstairs and plant yourself somewhere on the huge leather sofa you feel like you’re in your own lounge. Trust me; it’s hard to move from that sofa. It’s also a bit like the Tardis. It looks small from the outside but goes on forever. It has a huge back section, with a separate bar and plenty of leather seats, giving it the feel of a gentlemen’s club(but that could also be because of all the men sat there watching the football).

This was one of the first places that I had a drink in when I got to Bristol and it has popped into my life once every few months since that fateful day. It is the base for a lot of Uni societies, which is great so far as I am concerned, it offers far more than anything the Uni itself has to offer. Upon first inspection the bar is not very big but once you have seen the upstairs you realize why it is such a good spot to hold meetings. The wooden decked floors give it a rustic feel, which is backed up by the big sofas.

This bar lies along the less tasteful strip of Whiteladies road, which, on a Saturday night is the sort of place you may prefer to avoid. However, the bar is a comfortable place to have a drink with a bunch of mates, and if you’re not fussy, the drinks deals can be great. Aimed at sports lovers; the pub owners often put on big matches. Look out for occasional live music nights and other functions in the upstairs bar and don’t hesitate to suggest your own, the owners are extremely helpful and accommodating.

This is a swish bar at the bottom of Whiteladies Road, well positioned for a marathon pub crawl from the downs into town(if you were to ever embark on such a thing…). It’s a well run, well stocked, and nicely decorated place, with at least 3 different sections — the bar area, a little back room with some comfy sofas, and a mezzanine. There’s also a further room on the first floor, but this is reserved for private parties. Which, by the way, you can put on for free. In fact the place is very competitively priced, with a happy hour every day and a range of drinks promotions through the week. They’re home to a few Bristol Uni students, and host some sports union events, so it’s quite a lively place in the evening on most nights, but especially on the weekend. It’s just about big enough, though, to never feel claustrophobically crowded. A very decent bar and well worth a try.

Despite being blatantly aimed at students, this Clifton Down-based bar seems to appeal to everyone but our soon to be learned friends. The reason I say this is that they have tons of cheap booze offers, some more quirky than others(Mondays, for instance, are ‘Toss the Boss’ when you can win a free round, thankfully via a toss of a coin). I only usually go here on Sundays, mainly because it’s quite an agreeable place(certainly better than a chain sports bar), the booze is cheap(£2.50 for a pint of Heineken and 2−4−1 cocktails), and you can usually arrive just as the biggest of matches(Chelsea Vs Liverpool this weekend) is kicking off and still get a seat. This is partly because they have so many flatscreens TVs(four I believe) in a couple of different areas(main bar, cosy sofa back bit and upstairs mezzanine). One of the better places for a Sunday session though I’ve never been on an evening.

My favourite bar on Whiteladies. Great selection of drinks with good service. Varied and comfy seating on an upstairs floor, around the bar area and on a lower floor. They have a Wii if thats your kind of thing. Various drinks offers throughout the week such as 2−4−1 cocktails and coin toss night on Mondays. Good atmosphere for watching sport here too.

Awesome place. Great manager and staff. Always good for a laugh after work and on the weekends. They also do good offers on drinks ealrier in the evening. Then they have the Nintndo Wiis and free room hire. Well worth a few pints!
