All about the toasted sandwich. Every type is here. Nice layout and really the place to go if you feel like a toasted sandwich.

Toasters adds a new twist to your traditional sandwich shop. Not only do they have a «your way» approach to service, where you can chose a toaster sandwich or plain sandwich with your choice of fillings, but they also have set menu options for you to munch over. There are also salads in the same model, as well as muffins and sweet toasters. Yum! If I were to say anything negative it would be that it looks flashy and attractive, as do their toasters, but I sometimes want to try something a little more inventive or fun. How about putting fruit in your salads? Or putting speciality French cheeses in your toasters that no one else offers? Maybe I’m a food snob, but I would still prefer this to a ready-made sandwich outlet as you can see it being made in front of you and you know exactly what’s going into it.

Tucked in the Lane’s Market Square, this little gem filled me with pure joy(and cheese and ham) the other day whilst plodding round the shops with heavy bags. Whilst at university I developed a slight fetish for cheese and ham toasties and this has since escalated into an experimental love fest of different fillings. Whoever invented the toastie is a genius and I applaud them. Imagine my elation, then, when I discovered a café dedicated to combining cheese and ham and tuna and onion and beef and chicken and sweetcorn and beans and just about everything together to make yummy crispy toasties. The prices are reasonable(from £1.95 for just toast, or £2.95 upwards for toasties and paninis), the service is swift and friendly, and the place itself is very clean and comfortable. It’s got big floor to ceiling windows complete with a cute little window seat, outside tables and you can complement your toasties with your own created salad for £2.95. I’m not alone in my enthusiasm for Toasters; lining the wall by the window are compliment slips from happy customers proclaiming their love for the café.

If you’re looking for a great toastie specialist, then you’ve found it in Toasters. Watching my food getting prepared was a pleasure rather than a guilt trip, as I watched it being tended to carefully and hygienically(she washed her hands no less than three times in making my sandwich alone!). And the result wasn’t awash with grease as some people seem to think toasted sandwiched need to be. The lady that served me was friendly and chatty, and was rather incredulous that I’m at university, and even more so when I said I was 21. One day these boyish good looks of mine(cough) will win me something other than a mild feeling of prepubescence. But anyway, the interior of Toasters is also quite fresh and comfortable, and is certainly a place you can feel happy about having a bite to eat and relaxing in. I was a little pensive at first when I looked at the price board, but the quality of the food certainly made up for it, and there’s a loyalty card of sorts that allows you to get a free sandwich after having bought six. Not a bad thing in anyone’s books!

Toasters, one of the newer additions to Market Square’s buzzing coffee-shop scene, is the definition of a hidden gem: great food and fantastic service in a brilliant location! If you fancy a toastie of nearly any variety, or a do-it-yourself salad, or a slice of home-made cake, this little sandwich bar with a twist is for you. There is so much here I could wax lyrical about… The toasties, the main focus of the menu, range from single-slice chocolate or cinnamon toasts to elaborate, multi-slice sandwich specials, and are all hand-made on order. The wait is short, and the quality exceptional. I personally recommend the Gourmet Specials: each of them is a triple-decker toasted sandwich, with more than one fresh and local ingredient — heavenly! The prices are very reasonable, for the toasties as well as the salads(which, I’ll admit, I’ve never tried, but look delicious), the home-made cakes(yep, home-made on the premises) and the various sundries. All of the local and home-made flavour is packaged beautifully in a modern, hip-looking locale, an old-townhouse adapted into a sizeable seating area, although the very modern, Swedish-looking seating arrangement takes a little getting used to. My advice: sit at the outdoor tables in Market Square and soak up the rays in this very pleasant part of town. This little sandwich bar is everything you hope for from a local business, and a truly brilliant alternatively to the local Starbucks, Costa, etc. Give it a try, you won’t regret it!
