Chippys are always cheap, and its nice to have a wander through the Laines when its cold with a bag to warm your hands up. This is a good one as far as Brighton’s chippys go, the batters nice and crispy, the chips are fat and greasy, jobs a good’n. Follow the neon fish to find your way.

Plonked right in the middle of a bunch of alternative eateries, it seems a shame to go and grab some fish and chips, when so much good food is around… That said. you could do a lot worse than The Trawlerman for fulfilling your Fish and Chip cravings. Everything is pretty reasonably priced here, and you’re bound to get courteous service if my visits to Trawlerman are anything to go by. You may be disappointed to see that there is more of a focus on meat on the menu, with slightly less fish options than you may have expected. The food is pretty fresh tasting here, and doesn’t give you the impression many chippies do, that the food was cooked hours ago(possibly yesterday) and kept warm until needed… It also stays open later than many places in the Lanes, so it makes for one of only a few near by late night stops for nosh. I was also pleased that my food was over wrapped… A strange comment perhaps, but the last time I got fish and chips I had pretty much an entire newspaper over my fishcake… And I’m talking about the Telegraph rather than the Sun… Fortunately, Trawlerman doesn’t force you to take 10 minutes to get at your food.

As this fish and chip shop is in the very center of the North Laines– on the lovely little square with the mosaic design on the floor, such a nice touch– you would think that it would be a bit touristy and not very tasty. In fact it serves very nice chips and good fresh fish with light tasty batter. The prices are also suprisingly reasonable– around £5.50 for haddock and chips. The shop is very clean, has some nice tables outside to perch at and watch the world go by. My only quibble– and the reason I haven’t given them another star– is that the staff have been quite rude to my Indian friend and her English boyfriend. When they went in as a couple the guys serving behind the counter made an awful comment to the effect that an Indian girl shouldn’t be wasting here time with an English boy and should be dating her own kind! Awful.
