Really held out for giving Surma the benefit of the doubt because it used to be my favourite Indian take-away but unfortunately we’re through. I don’t know whether it’s changed hands or something because each and every time I’ve ordered from there recently there has constantly been an issue. This time around I ordered a lamb tikka starter which is normally moist and delicious but the pieces of lamb were actually black. So overcooked and burnt I couldn’t chew it. Lucky to still have teeth… They also forgot my poppadoms and mango chutney. My chicken kori had obviously been really sloppily made as it came with the hugest chunks of onion and pepper — they were just quartered and thrown in. Brighton is now officially RUBBISH for take-aways. Gutted.

This is by far the best Indian takeaway in my local area. The quality of the food is excellent and the portions are generous. They come in secure plastic tubs so no spills or greasy tops! They do ‘Kansas’ which include several dishes for a discounted price and on Sundays they do an excellent deal which includes any main dish(except grill or king prawn dishes) and rice for only £5 all in. The people who deliver are friendly and polite. A super all-round service. My meal this evening: Tandoori Kansa chicken & lamb tikka starter, ¼ tandoori chicken starter, chicken tikka mossalla, rice, nan, onion salad. £12.70. It’s actually enough food for two people to share.

Thanks to Unilocal I have ordered from here several times and gotten a pretty big variety(with a little help from my friends) of the huge number of dishes they offer. Whether you want spicy, mild, creamy, or dry, they have it, and they’re all delicious. While I’m a wimp and almost always go mild and creamy which has never failed to make me dance in my seat with joy while eating it, everything else I have tentatively tried has also been quality. Their delivery guys are always on time, are super nice, and the food is always hot when it gets here. I would definitely recommend it if you want some solid, moderately priced, delicious take out/delivery. It never fails to make my day(and subsequent days to come, did I mention each dish is enough for two meals at least? And they come in super useful containers that last forever?)!

Having regularly ordered curries from Bhindis across the road, we decided to try out the Surma Tandoori after reading great reviews. Our food took more than TWO hours to arrive and when it did finally arrive it was lukewarm and very bland. I always judge a good meal out on whether or not I could have made it better myself, and with this one I certainly could have. The only redeeming feature was that we got it for half price because we complained about the delay, otherwise I would’ve been fuming. Will not go here again.

What can I say about this little place? I have tried almost all the curry houses in Brighton but its something about this one that stands head and shoulders above the rest. I’ll try and sum it up in a few words… Gorgeous food(and I mean that)! Also the service is second to none. The chaps there speak perfect English and make you feel welcome… and special. its great to have an intelligent conversation while ordering my dinner! Delivery has always been prompt and the price is very reasonable. They also offer any main course, rice, onion salad and a papadom for £5 every Sunday. Bargain. If you’ve never ordered from there before or are new to Brighton then give them a try. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Feeling lazy on a Sunday? Of course you are, what with all the adventures and misadventures thrown at you by the weekend. What better way to replenish the soul than a takeaway curry, turn to Surma. For £5 you can get any main curry dish with rice! Unfortunately this doesn’t include my favourite, the Tandoori Mixed Grill is sublime. So whilst everyone else is savouring their Sunday steals, I’m sat like a chump paying full price. I’ve never been a happier chump and I’ve never been disappointed by Surma. Quality food, acceptable prices(especially on Sundays).

Expecting me to say yes, I had a couple of friends offer to cook for me this evening… But instead, I told them we were getting a curry. Disappointment turned to joy, and I was told we had to go to Surma Tandoori, which is my flat mates favourite curry house. Having had three years of expirience with the place, he should know, and assured me that the food was the best on Lewes road dispite several people raving about Bhindis just a little way up the road from there. We trusted his judgement, perused the reasonably priced menu(plenty of curries with rice for £5.20 — £7.00 as well as all the norms) and took our wares home with us, shivering against the wind. I’ve got to say, I was very impressed… It’s restaurant quality stuff at prices that aren’t breaking the bank. Nan’s were fresh and fluffy, packing the right amount of flavour, and I was informed that the Bajji were damned good(the fact he wouldn’t give away even one suggests he meant it). I thought about giving a 4* rather than 5, but seeing as no one else has, and the place seems to be run by such a grand family I thought I’d push the boat out! Now excuse me, as I think I may not be able to resist my leftovers after all…

Very friendly, family staff make this one of my favourite curries in Brighton. Mixed Grill on a sunday is certainly worth a shout, and if your loyal customers you might also find a special extra something with your order. The curries here aren’t too saturated in sauces, which means you can really taste the individual spices coming through each dish. My personal favourite is the chicken Madras which isn’t as spicy as a Vindaloo, like some Madras’s can be, but perfectly straddles the fine line. Possibly the best curry on the Lewes Road, and definitely the best value for money.
