Sukhothai Palace

I love this place so much that I’ve made up a jingle for it.

That might look negative but actually, Sukothai is endearing. The jingle is also more catchy than you might expect.
I’ve been to Sukothai about 10 times in the last year. I don’t recall one time where they have actually got all of my order correct. However, I never challenge it. I can’t. They serve with a smile that inflicts some kind of Asian paralysis. You feel sorry for them. You feel no anger.
Sometimes they will comment on their observations of me. One time they told me I had lost weight. Another time they joked about my hair. They have questioned my sexuality. Nobody is exempt from their comedic prowess.
I go on the odd lunch break during work. The lunch menu is great, for just £4.95 you get a starter and a main. It is a quiet and enjoyable place to go for lunch. Particularly for 2 – 4 people.
I usually opt for the spring rolls to start with a rice dish for main. Kra tiem phrick thai is my favourite dish. A few times I have asked for my dish without mushrooms and when the dish arrives, it has mushrooms in it. One time I asked why the mushrooms were not removed. They said, «Sorry, there is another thai word that is similar to mushrooms». No further explanation. My dish looked the same. I have no idea what they removed. I didn’t question their response.
Service is usually pretty quick. Unfortunately, I think the evening menu is overpriced for the quality of the food.
You need a place like Sukothai in your life. It keeps you grounded.

I arrived at the palace with low expectations after seeing some mixed reviews and left the establishment very pleasantly surprised!
Thai food has never been my favourite of all the Asian cuisines, but my prawn toast and pad cashew were a bargain (thanks to the cheap lunch 2 course deal) and were absolutely delicious. They even agreed to put some chicken in my pad cashew for only a small fee.
I definitely want to come back to sample the other delights on the menu, which is saying something because I’m normally much more interested in Japanese/​Korean food.
Only drawback I saw was that drinks are a touch pricey, but I think that’s common in places with lunchtime deals like the one here.

The lunch deal is fantastic. £4.95 for 2 course set lunch. Add chicken or beef with additional of only £1. The beef red curry is fantastic.

Sukhothai — Where you get what you’re given!
My boyfriend is a big fan of Sukhothai — he goes there a lot for his lunch with his workmates and recommended it. However he said although it’s great, you never quite get what you order! He mentioned that it’s happened every single time he has been, but because the staff are so nice and sweet, he never complains, instead he finds it quite funny!
So, when I visited Sukhothai, I bet him that my order would be perfect! Sadly I was wrong. I had the Tempura Prawns to start — they were fantastic and you get such a great sized potion, I was really happy with this.
For the main I ordered Beef Penang Curry — It was fantastic… apart from I got Chicken and not Beef! I just found it hilarious and didn’t complain as it was delicious anyway, I was stuffed by the end of it!
I would definitely go again because the food was delicious, and I kind of like not knowing what I’m going to get!

This is my second time here. The food is really excellent my Thai red curry with duck was excellent. The décor is very Thai and the atmosphere is brilliant. The staff seem very nice. Me and my friends had a really good time. There’s no need to rush you can take your time ordering your food. We didn’t have to wait long for our food to turn up and we thoroughly enjoyed it. And had a good natter too. Really good value for money and not too expensive either wonderful ¹⁰⁄₁₀
