I’d been on the hunt in Brighton today for a spiralizer — a little gadget where you can make spaghetti/spirals out of vegetables such as courgettes and carrots.(On a wheat free diet haha) I’d been to a few of the shops that sell cookware in Brighton that stocked spiralizers and found them to be quite expensive. I was about to give up and go online when I popped into Steamer Trading — a shop that is brilliant if you are into cooking/baking/kitchenware but is known to be fairly expensive. You can imagine my delight when I found a basic spiralizer for just £10! I was really surprised about this, because in other shops around town they were £10 — £15 more. I’d possibly come here again to buy kitchen gadgets — I found the staff to be somewhat aloof and not particularly welcoming — maybe I had caught them on a bad day?

Steamer Trading is like cooking porn to me. It’s the kind of shop I am happy to wonder around, salivating slightly at all the gadgetry I would like to purchase, should money and space be no issue. Sometimes I’m even known to gently caress a shiny stainless steel saucepan or subtly squeeze some silicon bakeware as I pass by. Laid out over two floors, there are plenty of things to please here, you can really find pretty much anything you would need in the kitchen. I love to cook and I’m certainly a sucker for many of the items that can be found in this shop. Do I really need a cooking thermometer, an egg slicer or heart shaped cupcake cases? Probably not, but it doesn’t stop me buying them. On my last visit I came away with a pot of ceramic baking beans — no, normal beans do not work the same! At the end of the day, I love to cook, and there are probably worse things that I could spend my money on. But to be honest, I’m just as happy to come in and browse. Oh, and the staff are really friendly here, and the majority are fellow cooking geeks, so are great to have a chat with about the importance of ceramic baking beans!

Fabulous place to be if you’re into cooking. While my wife’s off somewhere else shopping, you’ll find me in here. It is pricey but you get what you pay for. Disabled access is poor and the negotiation of stairs for less able are a big problem. Stock quality is excellent and not all items are out of your budget.

Popped in here before Christmas for a browse as they also have a store in battle, got chatting to a wicked member if staff who gave us free hot drinks and gave us some brilliant advice on some kitchen equipment, Great shop, brilliant staff, love it.

As a chef, this shop is a great location to get me excited. It certainly isn’t a shop to deck out your house on a budget. The shop itself is airy and stylish with aluminium stairs and a lot of glass. The staff are also quite friendly, but a lot are employed part time and perhaps lacking the knowledge of some of the more experienced staff. Make sure you are chatting with someone who knows their stuff if you want advise on knives etc. Speaking of which, they stock an impressive range of professional knives, all of which are displayed in cabinets. Expect to pay over £100 for each decent cooks knife, but also realise that one of these well looked after should last a lifetime. I’ll stop ranting on about knives for now! Aside from sharp choppers, they have a wide range of crockery, kitchenware and cooking devices. I was able to pick up mandolin from here for about £50. I guess the ethos behind Steamer is you can buy from a cheaper store and have something last a few years, or pay more from steamer for a long lasting item.

Wowy. Three floors of kitchen stuff. I was looking around on Christmas Eve, which was probably a bad idea … it seemed to be everyone’s favourite shop for last minute gift items. I have never seen so many kitchen appliances: coffee presses(in about five sizes), bread makers, blenders, kettles, toasters and toaster ovens, pasta makers, cappuccino and espresso makers… My goodness. You’d need an enormous kitchen or a lot of deep cupboards for one of each. Utensils came in plastics and metals and ranged in prices. Whisks and spatula sets, cutlery and dishware, scales and cute egg timers were downstairs. There was an impressive selection of bakeware — cake tins and pans of various sizes. I noticed some cute baby dishes, cutlery and bibs — lots of cartoons and plastic. Other gift ideas included mugs and books and novelty stuff. It was all fun to look through — but I think I’ll wait until the post-Christmas sale rush is over before I return.

This place makes me fantasize like no sex shop ever could. I wander around in a daze, desiring items I never even knew existed, longing for a home of my own, a kitchen table on which to set that burnt orange Le Creuset butter dish. Nice, expensive kitchen shops always have this effect on me. Suddenly I’m a mother of two baking birthday cakes with my shiny red Kitchen Aid mixer. Seconds later I’m a successful professional using my Alessi espresso machine. Whilst I’m not sure I really want the stories that accompany the products, I certainly do want to fill my little flat with beautiful kitchen appliances from Steamer Trading! A combination of tasteful high-quality merchandise and artfully curated displays make this shop a truly delectable experience. The ground floor is home to an extensive collection of kitchenware(pots, pans, Le Creuset sets etc.), whilst downstairs is given over to smaller items, such as brightly coloured cutlery, novelty oven gloves and even ‘onion goggles’! A latte in the stylish café on the top floor is the crowing jewel on this ultimate lifestyle boutique experience.

If gastronomy is the new porn, Steamer Trading Cook Shop is the gastronomic Agent Provocateur. In other words, it’s expensive, desirable and packed full of high quality kitchen aids, tools, gadgets and appliances. Spread over three floors, it’s also the largest kitchen shop in Brighton. The basement is packed with brightly coloured whisks, spoons, brushes, jars, containers and chopping boards. The top floor is home to a small café and impressive range of designer tableware, silverware and glassware. The danger zone is the ground floor — which houses a tantalizing array of copper and stainless steel pans, Kitchen Aid mixers and coffee machines. There’s also an impressive selection of more risqué items like the Global knife.

I could blow a serious amount of dosh in this place! Everything in it is apealing to me as I can spend hours on end in the kitchen left to my own devices. They have one of the best selection of chef knives in any shop I’ve seen(although things like that are a lot cheaper online) and I have purchased a couple that are still as sharp as the day I bought them. If you’re into making your own pasta, they have a great range of machines and attachments to make some really interesting stuff and also some fantastic pots and pans. They also carry some good moulds that are great when you want to impress your dinner guests! It is a bit pricey but then most of the good stuff is in the world!
