I very much agree with dmj1962 about this shop, but feel that their female clothes are quite good and some could definitely be worn to work, which is quite something. The shop was very rewarding to visit and there was plenty of really good stuff, and a sense of complexity without muddle or staleness. Finding the shop from the Brighton Western Road end, though, is extremely difficult and I became discouraged and thought I’d gone past it, when in fact it was only a few doors away. The reason for this can be seen in the 2 new uploaded pics, above, taken from the Brighton side. In the first one you can barely see the Oxfam logo peeping out shyly from behind a bold, confident building society sign. The Oxfam sign is visible at all only because I took the pic standing on the kerb. The other pic was taken from a more travelled route along this wide pavement, further in and closer to the shops. The Oxfam sign is clearly invisible in this second picture. This is the view that most passers by would get. This seems a real problem and I’m hoping in the future Oxfam will be able to increase their Western Road sales by getting a bigger/bolder sign clearly visible from the Brighton end of the road.

This is a really good charity shop, particularly if you are of a female disposition. There’s a lot of women’s clothing items here, as well as bags and accessories, but don’t worry if you do happen to be male, there’s plenty of things here for you too, including clothes, films, cds, books, and hardware items.

This is the best Oxfam in Brighton for clothes and accessories– they have great men’s suits and coats and really good quality women’s jeans. To pick out just a few things. They’ve managed to cram in some good books and records as well. This is also the only charity shop where I’ve found some designer bargains… I’m not promising anything!

Sometimes great things come in small packages. Like Tori Amos PJ Harvey Bjork & this particular branch of Oxfam. The small ground floor has a great selection of secondhand clothes coats, shoes, boots, bags and accessories whilst the even smaller upper ground floor has an equally varied selection of books, DVDS, CDs and vinyl. Last time I visited, they had a whole selection of Cormac McCarthy novels as well as recent best-sellers. Like I said, great things…

This branch of Oxfam sells predominantly second-hand stock. Items can be essentially categorised into books and records; clothing; and bric-à-brac. At Christmas they also sell Charity Christmas cards. There are plenty of second-hand paperbacks if you are looking for something undemanding to read on a plane, but it is also excellent if you are the type to buy second-hand jeans: I’ve seen Levi’s jeans here in excellent condition, at a fraction of the price that trendy ’boutique’ shops sell them in London. Beyond that, the range and choice of clothes is a bit limited — it’s definitely not the place to look for cheap designer labels. The other thing worth looking out for is old silver cutlery and bone-handled knives, if you are missing a few — we’ve bought teaspoons here over the years, again at a fraction of the price you’ll pay in an aspiring antique shop. Staff are all volunteers, so tend to be very helpful and friendly, if occasionally disorganised.
