Worst Chinese food ever Décor very good but at 9pm on Saturday night the restaurant was almost empty The food was disgusting The pork was truly ROTTEN and we complained strongly about it and also the duck Plate of Chinese vegetables was AWFUL Only the egg-fried rice was OK Everything else had no flavour and seasoning The wine was poor The food is a throwback to the cheap rubbish that the worst Chinese restaurants served many years ago Suffered with mild food poisoning after the meal

Western Road is packed full of restaurants and takeaways, so your choice is certainly a difficult one to make, so when I came to Jade for a rare meal out, I was nervous that I had made a mistake. I was pleased to discover that despite being a buffet(which so frequently leads to poor quality), Jade offer a very varied range of Chinese and other South East Asian cuisines, all of which are relatively well cooked and fresh tasting. I certainly would head back here because there are few criticisms that can be made against Jade, instead it is a good affordable and enjoyable meal.

Off all the Chinese restaurants in the Western Road area this one has to be in my top three. From Mon-Thurs you can eat all you want for just £13.95 and at weekends for £16. I’ve been so many times I must have tried everything at least once, which is why I can say with some authority that all the dishes are more than satisfying. While it might not be the best Chinese you’ve ever had its consistency and charm make it an easy first choice for anyone living nearby. The takeaway menu might be slightly dearer than others’ but for decent quality you should be willing to pay a bit extra. I have heard mixed opinions and I can see why some people may find the service a little brisk but I think you can get easily confused between attentiveness and pushiness.

Used to be one of my favorite as the food was great and so was the service. I was astonished to hear back in August 09 from a friend that a group of them went in there and suffered with terrible service. In my historical experience I has never found that to be the case and dismissed their complaint. After going there last week I was shocked to find out it is the case. They were not busy(5 tables in use) and the service was awful. Pancakes and hoi sin sauce along with cucumber and spring onion were forgotten when we ordered duck and by the time then came out the duck was cold. The crispy Mongolian lamb was greasy damp and slimy. They kept bringing out the wrong food. The worse point is that they are now pumping so much MSG into their food that after hardly any starters we were so uncomfortably full. I refused to pay the service charge but begrudgingly paid the £60 for 3 people for the food which only included one beer and two lemonades and about the same amount of food as you would find in 3 takeaway cartons. If you have enjoyed Jade in the past please don’t go there again as the experience will now make you angry and wish that you could borrow a Delorean from Michael J Fox.

Not just specialising in Chinese food but offering well over 100 traditional dishes from Japan, Thailand and(I believe) Sri Lanka, Jade offers the ultimate all you can eat experience. I don’t give out many 5* reviews… But Jade is one of the lucky few that earns every last one of them and then some. With a huge menu of unique dishes on offer, you’d think it would be difficult to decide what nation you would like to sample from, let alone what meal to have. But the beauty of Jade is that you pay the all you can eat price, and you order any number of any dishes(except deserts) that take your fancy. Tempura, green Thai prawn curry(or beef/pork/chicken), dozens of not to be sniffed at soups, noodles, nut dishes, spring roles, duck pancakes, sea weed, prawn toast… Pretty much any popular«oriental» dish you can think of is available to you, and then some on top. It’s quite an overwhelming feeling that rushes across your brow when you first peruse the menu wide eyed muttering to your friends and fellow diners that this simply can’t be true… I can have anything on the menu… If your first taste of Jade is anything like mine, you’ll have one smug character sitting alongside you smiling broadly at their day long hiatus from eating, and relishing their moment of hunger in the knowledge that intense satisfaction is mere moments away… I’ve heard people complain about quality, but I just don’t understand it myself. I suppose if you are the type who doesn’t eat out unless the meal has been tenderised by Gordon Ramsay’s buttocks, blessed by Ainsley Harriott and fervently wined and dined by Jamie Oliver… then you’ll likely be disappointed… For me though, variety and volume Are met with quality, and there is no finer combination than that. Be adventurous, be inquisitive and rather than satisfy your taste for the orient with mediocre take outs, hit Jade for a mid week evening of wonderment and delight!

This is my pick of the Chinese restaurants in the Western Road/Church Road area. Their all you can eat menu, which is available Mon– Thurs for £13.95, will satisfy even the most ravenous of clients. However, as the price goes up to £16 at weekends, I would question whether the quality is worth quite that much. There’s nothing particularly outstanding about Jade but it’s just one of those consistently satisfying places. I’ve heard people complain about the service but I’ve had no problems myself. I think people often mistake attentive waiters as being pushy or impatient. The décor is simple but stylish, without going over the top on the Chinese theme. The dark, varnished wooden furnishings give the room a sense of elegance lacking in other mid-range Chinese restaurants. Also, the take away menu is equally good and it won’t set you back too much either. If you visit from 12 – 2.30pm you’ll be offered a most satisfactory special lunch deal for which you get a starter and main course for a mere £5. Booking would be recommended during weekends but usually there’s enough space to accommodate a table of four or less. Also, if it’s your birthday you’ll get treated to a rather unorthodox Happy Birthday song, which cuts through the chatter like a bombshell. As everyone stares at you, wishing the awful song would stop, you can feel thankful that you took my advice. Actually, on second thoughts just don’t mention it’s your birthday!
