My local pub, you will find me here a lot. Brilliant bar staff, friendly regulars, many a great time spent here having loads of fun. Decent drinks, new wine list, Sky Sports, music, pool and darts, free wifi and beer garden. Pizza menu coming very soon…

The Duke of Wellington is a fine place to enjoy a couple of pints if you have a train to catch. I mainly seem to find myself in there when slightly inebriated, owing to the fact it is relatively cheap and in a good location near to the station for catching that last train home. The beers on offer are good, especially for a cider drink such as myself with it being a server of Scrumpy Jack. The bar is also ridiculously low, which means that when you reach that stage in the evening whereby you are struggling to stand, it is a decent height to lean upon. There is a good covered garden for those who like to puff a lung, and the back area features a pool table and quiz machines which are always popular. There are a couple of big televisions which show sporting events — and rather excitingly, requests are taken as to what to put on! The only downside to the Welly is the fact that the toilets are a hefty climb upstairs, although if you have the ability to blend into the crowd then it is not particularly difficult and hardly ever frowned upon to use the disabled toilet downstairs.

The primary reason I really like the Duke of Wellington(incidentally everyone affectionately calls it the Duke of Boots), is that it never seems to shut. Often, when walking back from North Laine with friends, we’ll pass the Boots and just have one more for the road. What a boon! It looks largely unremarkable from the outside and inside it’s hardly exuberant but this is a pub of many facets. They play a lot of sport on the telly there and Saturday afternoons are packed with football fans and the like. The sheltered garden is pleasant. The pool table often seems to be the venue for a lively contest. They have a popular poker night too. The staff are among the most bubbly of any pub in Brighton and whoever stocked the bar computer with music has impeccable taste. There’s always something interesting being piped out and they take requests. But what’s with the bar? It must be the lowest in the country? Ideal for wheelchair users, but a little on low side for a strapping six footer. I’m hardly a giant and it barely reaches belt level. Wags theorise that the pub was designed by dwarves but that seems unlikely. Everything else is normal size. It’s a good time pub, basically. It does what a pub should do. And it does it well. Who wants more than that?

A nice little pub, recently refurbished, with a loyal clientele, serving a couple of real-ales which are normally decently kept. It also has a small outside(rear) drinking area which also serves the smokers. Friendly staff, and it has a pub quiz during the winter months(though we’ve never won). They usually have a fiendish music round, so bring along someone who’s knowledgeable about 1960s and 1970s music

Small, backstreet local which has been recently refurbished to a very high standard, with neutral décor. It also has a side garden and smoking area. The clientele are a mainly local crowd, but it’s close to the railway station so also gets communters on their way from work. It serves Harvey’s Sussex Bitter(nice) and a guest ale. Staff are friendly and topped up my pints without asking. They do a general knowledge quiz every other Sunday.
