The Barley Mow is physically a traditional pub with a twist. It offers beers and pale ales on tap. My favourite of all is called DNA. The seating arrangement indoors somehow resembles your nan’s living room and can get a bit tight when it’s busy. My husband and I go out into the beer garden. The sofas have overhead heating and a fire close to the benches.

A nice pub, with nice staff and good food, it all adds up to what was a cracking little pub, but… It needs a lick of paint and general overhaul as it’s starting to look more than a little tired. If how a pub looks doesn’t rank highly on you reasons to go or avoid, then give it a whirl, it is a nice place to spend a chilled couple of hours, otherwise, you might be a little put off. NB: It has indeed had a touch up, the covered beer garden is now particularly nice. Back to being a strong recommend, if you’re out and about in Kemptown.

Nasty! Extremely overpriced food and it’s served grossly over-cooked. Stay clear if I were you!!! Take a look at the kitchen’s windows from the street on the 1st floor. Would you want to eat food that comes out of there? There’s great food in nearby pubs that are much, much better value for money like the Thomas Kemp, a stone throws away, or The Camelford Arms in Camelford Street, about 10 mins walk away. I’m only giving it one star cos it won’t let me give none!

I came here on quiz night(thursday) and it was so so awesome! The woman that ran the quiz had excellent questions and everyone could hear her perfectly. Which really makes a difference when you are in a clamoring pub! I think next time I go on a quiz night I will show up early though, the place was super packed and seating was limited. The winning team got 50 pounds too, not bad! I was in the barley mow every day I was in Brighton on this trip and really love to sit around, play head banz and talk to the locals. They have new crinkly cut cheesey chips too which are the bomb.

This is a pub with a tuck shop behind the bar! If you ever get a craving for black jacks, sherbet dip dabs or flying saucers with your pint then this is surely the place to come. The Barley Mow is a cosy pub in the middle of Kemp town, with wooden beams and a roaring fire. However, it has a contemporary feel with chalk slogans in the walls and a large selection of board games should you wish to while away the hours here. It also has a great covered area with patio heaters out the back which I’m sure the smokers must appreciate. The have a good selection of pub meals. I went for the chilli and rice, which while tasty did lack in spice. I will have to come back to test out their claim to have«the best chips in Brighton»

Ive been in the Barley Mow on a few occasions, for various different reasons. My latest excursion there was for Sunday lunch, and it was lovely! It was reasonably priced for such a huge plate of food(around 9 quid), and everything tasted really fresh, and didn’t have that suspicious element of being boiling on the outside and tepid in the middle. The staff were really friendly, and made us and our dog feel very welcome — sorry, Ronaldo A! — giving him a bowl of water and a dog chew. The chef came down himself to make sure our food was good — a nice touch. The other thing going in their favour is that they have a separate menu on a Sunday also, for those of you who aren’t fans of the traditional Sunday lunch — you know who you are! The only thing I wasn’t overly impressed with was the beer garden — although it was pretty, it was really quite smoky as a large part of it was covered. It really does hit you, especially now that we’re all so used to pubs being smoke-free zones. Still — worth a look, worth a bite, and you must try the sweeties. Proper old school!

This pub has charecter is probably the best way to put it! In previous reviews you probably read shabby a lot where as I think a little rough around the edges! The prices are reasonable, the drinks are good, their sunday roasts are always nice and theres a nice atmosphere in the suprisingly big beer garden. This is a place I do return to so would recommend to people after a good friendly night out!

I was sitting next to a dog the entire time I was here, but that didn’t detract from the experience(well, the dog smelled just a little bit, but I grew accustomed to the smell). I didn’t have enough money to enjoy a main(which runs around £10), but I did enjoy the sweets they had. It’s the first time I’ve enjoyed sweets at a bar, and it was a delightful experience. Although I’m not really much of a pub person, this is one I would frequent just to enjoy a nice beer with a few friends in a good atmosphere.

If you love your ales, local and all, then you should definitely go here. The Sunday roasts have survived on good faith and good reputation, and for a pub of its calibre, it’s really not that bad in terms of quality, price, portion size and taste. There is a nice sense of décor and the staff are really nice and friendly as well as the mixed crowd of people that frequent this pub. If you are more into a pub that doesn’t have a faint smell of wee, looks a little more chi-chi or a little more rambunctious then this is not for you. It caters for everyone, but might not be for everyone. Ale lovers a go go, swish nu-bar lovers a no no.

A nice local pub in Kemptown village, well known for its food and traditional atmosphere. The décor is proper, traditional pub style, with a ‘living room’ kind of feel, although much bigger! Out the back there is a decent sized garden for smokers and the summer months. The best thing about the place though, as others have mentioned, is the sweet jars on the bar. I’ve always argued that pubs should sell sweets — but few do.

I had forgotten about this pub until I saw the reviews! My boyfriend and I went there last February after we foolishly decided to take a walk along the beach. We were so cold we couldn’t speak and fell into this pub like artic explorers who’d found a tent with central heating. It was a brilliant place-a real pub with low ceilings, crazy carpets like my gran had, and excellent ales on tap. We sat at a big wooden table by a fire and gratefully ordered roast– vegetarian for me(you may not believe me but it was a delicious homemade nut roast with piles of nicely cooked veg), and boyfriend had roast beef-slightly pink, tender and juicy. Good cabbage and crispy potatoes too. I always feel like we need a labrador at these sorts of places, to lie on our feet, it has that cosy unpretentious feel. Samantha’sright though go early-ish, they sell out.

Situated in Kemptown Village the Barley Mow is a really traditional old style Brit pub with an open log fire, dogs are welcome which add to the homely vibe. You cant miss it on St Georges road as its a pale purple colour. The bar offers local real ales like Harvey’s and Arundal as well as a old school sweets like Dip Dabs and Wham bars!
Food wise its great for Sunday Roasts but get there before teatime because its really popular and they have been known to run out completely. generally the pub is known for its good food but is priced at around £10 a main. It has a covered & heated outside space which is bearable to eat in even in the coldest winter months.

A pleasant pub in Kemptown with a reputation for good food. I’ve tried the food a couple of times and, while it’s quite nice, I’m not sure it justifies the price tag(around £10 for a main, if I remember right). It also does a range of real ales served in good condition. The furniture is mostly bench seating which is a bit old but probably adds to the character. The gents toilets are quite good for a pub. There are some board games available to play. For smokers, there’s a large patio out the back covered by awnings or something.

The Barley Mow is one of those pubs that is more renowned for its food than anything else. But, this is not to distract from the fact that it is still a darn good pub. With two open fires, it is especially good on a cold, wet Winters day, where you can warm your insides and outsides. Sunday lunches are enormous and a challenge to finish, but quantity is not substituting quality. Food for the rest of the week is varied, with daily specials. Staff are friendly. Board games are available. There is a(hard) quiz each Thursday. And a large, heated, covered beer garden. Rarely quiet, always value for money, add it to your list of places to visit when in Brighton.

It’s shabby, child and dog friendly, amazing food and you can buy a jamboree bag from the bar. This place benefits from its lack of pretension and its really laid back Brighton ethos. Go. Go. Go. We’ve got a dog-friendly guest house(Avalon) and everyone who’s gone to the BM — about 30 — usually with dog, loved it. That’s a good success rate.

One of my favourite pubs in Brighton. I have never had a bad pint here. It is always worthwhile going out of ones way to visit here. The furniture is funky and the atmosphere is always friendly. Sadley the staff seem to be different everytime I supp here. The food is a bit over priced. The Sunday roast is passable. There is a big menu of meat/vegetable dishes. Some fish are also on offer. Theres a covered over outside area that is huge. In winter, with the heaters on, it is very cosy outside. Real Ale is the best thing. With at least four beers and a cider.

Situated a little way out of the Kemp Town area of Brighton, the Barley Mow is a cosy, traditional pub, with a mixed gay/straight clientele. The interior is slightly ramshackle, but it also has a large outdoor seating area, most of which is under cover. As well as a good selection of real ales, they have an extensive menu of good value traditional pub food, with a good Sunday Roast(portions can be generous — be warned!). Slightly oddly, they also stock a wide range of confectionery — I’m not sure what would go with a pint of Wadworth’s 6X. It’s a pub my partner and I are more than happy to cross town for.
