A sweet little independent gift shop in the Piccadilly Arcade off New Street. This shop is great if you are wanting a gift for your mum/sister/baby/someone at work. — They sell Jelly Cat soft toys(prices £8−20 approx.), silk scarves, bespoke wall clocks and porcelain and a number of ornaments. Also a wide range gifts bags, wrapping paper and cards, which I’ve not seen anywhere else. There are also a number of cabinets with a wide selection of silver jewellery for women, grouped according to the colour of semi precious stones. I think originally the silver was the main focus of the business but it has since expanded. Always worth popping in if you are stuck for ideas!

One shop, a world of pretty. Smithsonia is a jewellery and gift shop located in the Piccadilly arcade. Their buying policy seems to be «stock it if it is something special» and it works! Everything on offer is just that little bit different to what you’ll find on the high street. The choice of silver jewellery is stunning, with high-end pieces for when you are feeling flush and some cheaper(but still lovely) items for when you simply fancy a treat. There are plenty of unusual artsy trinkets and handmade glass pieces, though I tend to make a beeline there to pick up special birthday cards for my nearest and dearest. I love the fact that Smithsonia has been open in the same spot for nearly 30 years, proving that Birmingham retail is about way more than the big name chain stores.

A wonderful independent gift, card and jewellery shop. If you are looking for a birthday or greeting card that is a little different to what you might find in one of the chains this is a good place to start. Their collection is not huge but you will definitely find something a little different. They also stock fabulous gift wraps and papers. To entice you into the shop the window displays are made up of some beautiful and unique silver jewellery. Again, here you will find pieces you can’t find anywhere else. If you are looking for special pieces of silver jewellery at fairly reasonable prices start with this shop. Inside the staff are welcoming and very helpful.

Smithsonia is an exceptional jewellers and gift shop based in Birmingham’s Piccadilly Arcade. They sell many things from gorgeous silver jewellery to Japanese Kokeshi Dolls and amazing sculpted pieces in ceramics and glass. There is something for most budgets in this shop and it’s a great place to browse. I bought some cute button earrings for just £10 but there are plenty more extravagant gifts, believe me! You could spend forever just gazing in their windows as you walk past; there is so much to see — it must take them forever to clean! They do beautiful and unique silver rings by up and coming jewellery designers as well as pieces by established brands such as Pilgrim. Every time I walk by I can find at least 15 or so items in their window that I want to buy; I’m sure everyone else can too which is why they are so successful. Smithsonia are the longest running business in Piccadilly Arcade, they’ve been there for around 30 years. If you are looking for a gift then definitely check them out first and impress your loved one with something a little different.

An absolute gem of a place tucked away in the beautiful Piccadilly Arcade off New Street, worth a visit for the ceiling paintings alone. When you have finished standing staring open mouthed at the dreamy Magritte/The Simpsons skies, go into Smithsonia which is the perfect place to buy an extra special gift or card. Their main stock is jewellery and clocks and they always seem to have something a little bit different. Perhaps it’s that the atmosphere seems more art gallery(accessible though, never stuffy) than retail but I always find it is an extremely pleasant shopping/browsing experience. Then when you’ve finished, there are those clouds again
