The Prince of Wales had been recommended to me as a lunch time venue for a Friday pint, and yesterday I finally got round to going. Working in Brindleyplace it was just a short walk round the corner, a hidden gem in the mist of offices, chain pubs and restaurants. Walking in we got straight to the bar with a good selection of ales and a friendly welcome from the bar lady. We also ordered a couple of bowls of chips which came promptly and filled the lunchtime grumble. This will most certainly be my local pub of choice from now on for a quick afterwork or lunch time tipple.

I hadn’t been in the Prince Of Wales for a couple of years so I was surprised in the change, refurb, extension. Bar extended and a fresher look. Although I do prefer the older essence in a pub, it still holds its character. A pub needs the odd sticky table and ripped beer mat in my world. The ale selection is good — Black Sheep is sold, which is my personal fave. Lots of live music scheduled. Open mic’s every Thursday. Friendly regulars in there too. Love the fact a dog came in. Not many of those places in Brum but dogs in pubs should be allowed as per standard, I left(following my 2nd performance in two years in POW, to a very warm goodbye. I also got told by one of the hosts that I better be back as she knew where I lived. Although she said this with a charming glare, it did plant a questionable seed in my head on whether to go back. But as Arnie would say… «»

I had never seen this place before, despite it being in the centre of town, before I went to see a friend of mine perform some comedy in it. It’s a good pub; far more friendly than a lot of traditional ‘old man’ pubs — we felt very welcomed there, by both the staff and the other clientele. The have a good selection of beers and ales on tap, and do standard bar food. It is small, and there’s nothing to particularly distinguish it from any other traditional pub, but it’s cosy, welcoming and not too pricey. All in all, a good thing.

Despite being only a stone’s throw from the vomit flecked, soulless hell hole that is Broad Street, the Prince Of Wales remains an impressive real ale style pub with all the necessary character. I first encountered it as part of Birmingham Arts Festival and have been back several times since. With as many as seven or eight ales on at any given time and a high standard of beer keeping, there’s sure to be something for all shades of traditional ale fanatic. The atmosphere is best described as friendly, with very little acknowledgement of modern trends — this is not a fashionable pub and it’s all the better for it! The live music events are not world beaters but are good fun none the less, and definitely are of a higher standard than many free pub gigs. All in all, a pub you should pay a visit to if you ever get the chance.

The Prince of Wales, overshadowed by the ICC and Symphony Hall and on route to the Flapper, is well worth a visit if you are in the area. The owner and manager Steve has worked hard to make this place a success and you’ll often find a set of friendly locals and staff there. They do the most wonderfully simple bar food — cheap and cheerful although the kitchen seems to close quite early in the evening. There is a great selection of real ales on offer and on my last visit I had a pint of Mad Goose which was excellent. The drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

This place is a serious relief from all the plastic places by the canal and along broad street). A proper pub, serving 8 real ales(nothing rare, but my Mad Goose was a good pint) with no children allowed(why would they be here anyway). Has a celebrity endorsement too. This is the pub where Lady Ga Ga turned up for a drink and bought everyone at least a round. Music’s still loose stool water though.
