Ophelia is a charming, relatively new, independent arts and crafts shop situated on the infamous York Road in Kings Heath. The manager Leanne is a talented seamstress and makes gorgeous dresses(tailoring available), insanely cute baby booties, unique children’s clothes, cushions, decorations and much more. She also sells the wares of many talented local crafters, jewellers, designers and many more. The shop is beautifully decorated and laid out with all manner of clothes, jewellery, cards, crafts and much more on sale. The prices are reflective of the time and effort that has gone into making these bespoke gifts and clothes. Next time you want a new dress, clothes for your wee bairns or a birthday gift and card, head down to Ophelia and support your local creatives!

A new-ish outlet along York Road, and another shop that will go to help build upon York Road’s reputation as one of Brum’s more interesting and innovative streets housing as it does an independent record store, a couple of superb cafes, a vintage clothes shop and a family run pet shop… and, for the time being at least, a Cash Converters, but the less said about that the better Ophelia is a craft and gift shop that, so far since it’s opening about 5 or 6 months ago, looks to be doing a decent trade in crafts and gifts that have a quirky and hand-made feel. Most of the material sold inside is independently sourced so you’ll probably find an ideal and reasonably unique gift for a friend or loved one. Prices are slightly higher than you’d find on a high street, but that’s because the makers are artists are getting a fair chunk of the profits. The merchandise is of sufficient quality however that you will not quibble over the extra few pounds.

Ophelia is fresh faced, having opened up a couple of weeks before Christmas 2011. Full of craft clothes for little ones, owl-making kits, prints, découpage chairs, delicacy food, prints and body products, these products are loving displayed under home-made bunting skies. Having real philanthropy behind the shop as well as the independent spirit that drives the shops keepers of York Road, Leanne sells local craft people’s wares on their behalf. My favourite maker there is Blue Lemon, who hand-make sharp citrus soaps, and fizzing bath bombs. Miscellaneous craft workshops,(including ones for kids) and book discussion groups from the premises too. As new classes pop up on a regular basis, you’d be advised to give the shop a call to keep updated.
