I’ve been to a teppanyaki before so I knew what to expect: Food cooked on a large surface grill right in front of your eyes. I’d about watching the food being cooked and interacting with the chef. They are happy to chat to you while they work but if you are shy and quiet they will probably not say very much. You are controlling your experience. I went on a busy Friday night with 3 friends. We had lots of Sake and the main meal was excellent. Service is causal which means you have to be proactive about getting the bill and asking for more drinks. Anyway while your food is being cooked the chef will call over staff to take more drinks orders. Worth a visit just for the experience.

Mitaka Teppanyaki is all about the show– I have come here a few times for their pre theatre menu which is very reasonable for three courses. The food is freshly cooked in front of you, with chefs juggling eggs and flaming the vinegar, which is pretty entertaining. This time I had the chef’s zensai starter, which was a California ISO, a tempura prawn and little parcel with(I think) duck. All very good. Otherwise you could just have the rolls. The chef then comes out to prepare your food — don’t expect to have much conversation at this point! The sirloin steak teriyaki we had was a very generous serving and was cooked pretty well– this isn’t the best Japanese food you’ll get in Birmingham, but it was tasty enough. As you’re sitting around a large teppanyaki grill you may find yourself sharing a table with others, so it’s not particularly intimate, but it can be very good fun. The dessert from the set was coconut icecream served with a variety of fruit. For the set menu price I think that it was very good value. Plus just something slightly different, for a change.

A good Teppanyaki place I’ve been here a few times over the years and never been disappointed. I’ve always gone for the Teppanyaki, sometimes with a discount, sometimes without but either way it’s fairly good value. Once a friend did order other dishes from the menu and said they were ok. I think it was the shushi so they can do other stuff but I would only go for Teppanyaki personally… it’s what they specialise in. The food quality I’ve found to always be good, fresh and tasty… you can see all the raw ingredients in front of you before they start so there is no question of freshness… then it’s a bit of oil, soy sauce, few spices etc. all the veggies, meats and rice spun around and cooked together… simple flavours that I love personally The entertainment here is the chef, and they have good ones IMHO, so if you’re going here don’t expect to be able to chat with all the table until the chef is finished. After that it’s fairly chilled and they leave you to eat.

Food was very nice, but waiting staff were really rude and un-accommodating. Service for drinks was very, very poor. The layout of the restaurant made it difficult to socialise with others in the party. Overall, I would go back for ‘tea’ as a couple, but wouldn’t go back for special occasions as we were not made to feel at all special when we went for a birthday a few weeks ago.

Pretty terrible. The décor is in desperate need of updating. Service at the front desk was good though. The food itself is fairly bland. Be aware that here you are paying for the show(the food is cooked in front of you) and not for the quality or quantity of the food. We ordered a starter, a main, and a bottle of beer each and it came to £50. Far too expensive. Would not go again.
