The Pipe and Glass is a Michelin starred pub in East Yorkshire and won Michelin Pub of the Year 2012 following on from The Hinds Head in 2011(Heston’s pub in Bray) — it was a great place to go for my first meal out in 2014(New Year’s Day). Smoked haddock and pearl barley risotto, grain mustard veloute and parmesan crisp — this is on the specials board but is pretty much ever present and it’s one of those dishes that you have every time you go somewhere as you don’t want to risk a different starter that may not be as good. The only thing I’d like is more parmesan crisps as it adds another texture — 9⁄10 Loin of venison, haggis samosa, celeriac purée, parkin crumb and blackberries — as I think I mentioned last month, I nearly always have deer /venison if it was on the menu and today was no different. It’s not the best picture as the room was pretty dark but the venison was perfectly pink and to steal a cliché, «melt in the mouth» — the blackberries and jus complemented it so well and the parkin crumb gave a little bit of crunch to each bite. I’ve only had haggis once before and wasn’t impressed but this was pretty good — I’m not convinced it needed to be there but I’m not complaining 9⁄10

Came here for the night to celebrate and stayed over in one of the two luxury rooms they have attached. Absolutely fantastic. Had lunch which was very nice followed by an opulent evening meal. For my main I had Loin of Roe deer with junioer, savoy cabbage, haggis pasty, celeriac purée with a mulled pear and parkin crumb. It came in at £24.95 which although expensive, is a good value for cooking of this calibre. It was tasty and left me wanting more. Pudding was choclate done five ways. It was so rich I could feel my blood coagulating. Had to lie down for half an hour. Recommend you share it as on your own it is just too much. See photo. I found the service efficient and friendly, beer on draught fantastic, a well thought out wine list with recommendations of what to drink with what food. This is one of the best in the area and should be for those special occassions. Recommended whole heartedly

Stopped in for a drink and a bite mid afternoon. Service was friendly and accommodating, bar food excellent and well priced. Pub was pretty with warm appearance and décor. The only downside for me was the carpet and seating/tables in the bar area which were not so comfortable and inviting(modern wood, not enough warm/worn leather sofas). Minor point otherwise an excellent choice. Would have loved to have stayed to try full evening menu.

We have been to the Pipe and Glass a number of times for special occasions and they have never disappointed. They have rightly received national recognition in The Times Good Food Guide, and been awarded a highly-prized Michelin star, but banish all thoughts of tiny portions, extortionate prices and Heston-style experimental cuisine. Imagine simple pub food, cooked to perfection, and just the right-sized portions to leave you filled but not stuffed. The average cost of a three-course meal with a bottle of wine is about £50, but for the quality of food, beautiful country surroundings and attentive yet unobtrusive service, it is definitely value for money. The Pipe and Glass is obviously an establishment which has had a lot of time and effort invested in it, and it is rightly reaping the rewards. If you’re looking for somewhere for a special occasion, maybe an anniversary or birthday meal, or just a romantic meal for two, I cannot recommend the Pipe and Glass enough. It is a bit of a drive to get there from Hull, but on a lovely summer afternoon, I can think of few better places to enjoy a drink and a beautiful meal than the delightful country surroundings of this hidden gem.

This place was so hard to find as it’s in the middle of nowhere! Just managed in time for the 12.30 booking(phew!). I went on a Sunday, so had the experience of trying their sunday roast. I must say the service was extremely good, the staff were so polite and friendly. It didn’t take long to be seated and the décor inside was so pleasant and warm and we were quickly served with some homemade garlicky bread with butter(served on a mini, circular slate, which was cool). I opted for the beef with an ale, gravy sauce and this was lovely, with the usual additions to a ‘roast’ — crunchy potatoes, greens and reds, a hugemongous yorkshire pudding, and a squidge of mash. We also had a rabbit meat starter, but can’t remember the name cos it was worded so posh haha. The prices were extremely good, seeing as it was a michelin starred restaurant, and was very satisfied after the meal. This place is highly recommended, if you’re after a lazy sunday, with good food, service, and scenery!

My sister booked a table for myself and my mother and father for their Golden Wedding Anniversary. We have been to the P & G many times in the past and it was always excellent, but not for around ten years. It has certainly changed. Our arrival seemed to catch the staff by surprise and they were not able to seat us in the lounge while our table was readied. It was up to us to then find our table since the waitress, who beckoned us to our table, walked ahead without waiting for any of our party, particularly for my mother who is infirm. I then found myself sitting at a setting that was covered in some sort of sooty material, which was eventually cleared away after some prompting. My prawn cocktail consisted of some prawns(fewer than found in an M&S prawn sandwich by my reckoning) covered in a barely discernible layer of sauce, with a leaf of lettuce, some slices of red pepper and cucumber. The prawns did not seem particularly fresh. £8.95 for that. My mother’s mackerel was fresh and tasty, half a fillet. My sister’s crab I’m not sure about: she had not eaten crab before. For mains I had duck done three ways, which was execrable. The sourness of the gooseberries was overpowering, the breast was too rare and without flavour, the comfit like cardboard in flavour and colouring. Rosti with creamed celeriac accompaniment did not work at all. My father’s chop was too rare for him(risky with pork), the crackling too hard and flavourless, the mash potato gooey. My mother’s pudding was rhubarb trifle(note to any chef worth his chops: rhubarb is a spring«fruit», and by July it is rank). The accompanying biscuits were cooked to an ancient, recently-unearthed recipe, as the accompanying note explained. The cloves in them were completely overpowering, quite nasty. It is better that this recipe remains buried, in my view, and I am quite capable of making my own mind up about the food I am eating I do not need a note of explanation. My sister, father and me did not risk the desserts. And don’t forget, readers, if you want vegetables with your mains, they are a separate order. We were not told this. In conclusion: I am furious that this was so poor. This was a special occasion that we had saved up for at a restaurant that we know well and used to love.

This is an amazing gastropub in a delightful village just a few miles away from Beverley(by the way, do visit the fantastic church which is a great example of Victorian Gothic revival). The welcoming is warm and professional and you are ushered to your table when the kitchen is ready to serve, while you sip your G&T or your Martini in the pleasant snug(only gripe is the pipe music… please, no need!!). Food is superb, accompanied by service of very good standards. All in all the sort of place you want to get back to time and time again. I don’t agree with the comments that it is expensive, coming from the south of England this place is definitely a bargain for the standards of food provided. As for the service, it was attentive and prompt, I can’t say that I wanted more and certainly wouldn’t expect silver service as the ambience isn’t conducive for this kind of experience. Well done Pipe and Glass, I shall look forward to my next trip to the Yorkshire Wolds!

I booked this place several months ago as it has a good reputation and scored 4 in the Which Good food guide. This small country pub which serves mainly food is situated in this small village in East Yorkshire. It was therefore a surprise to me that the whole experience was not as pleasant as I had expected, don’t get me wrong the food was pleasant. The wild Rabbit Rissoles I had as a starter where very nice as where the half queenie scallops my partner had(although I would have preferred fresh whole scallops), her Wood Pigeon was excellent however the Hay baked Chicken I had was dry and rather tasteless combined with the slightly processed tasting mash. The vegetables where fresh and I felt slightly undercooked(don’t get me wrong I don’t like veg mushy like granny used to do however these to me had a bit too much crunch), however my partner said she thought they where perfect. The Bread and Butter pudding I had as desert I couldn’t fault as my partner couldn’t with her Burnt Lemon with Blood Oranges Compote. The Bottle of Chalk hill Shiraz was a good choice and reasonably priced, What I would say for a grand total of £101.00 I was expecting something a bit more special. I think next time I will spend my hard earned crust in one of the other establishments offering better quality service and food within a half a mile drive.
