Nice décor, reasonable ales. Ordered a venison suet pudding, was absolutely dreadful, stodgy suet, fatty chewy venison, school dinner peas, couldn’t have been worse. The waitress brought condiments to the table, and instead of leaving them, stood guard and waited for us to take some, then snatched them away. Maybe I wasn’t trusted?

Maybe I’m polishing up The Globe in my mind but of my whole trip in England, this pub was my favorite… we arrived a bit late and had a rocky start to get a waitress to answer some questions but from then on it was great. It was fairly busy but as mentioned, there were enough cozy nooks and crannies, that you didn’t feel rushed and crowded. The servers were lovely and the food delish! Our friends where we were staying had recommended a few things… so we tried the Beef, Mushroom and Ale pie and the Chicken, Leek and Ham pie. Of the two, the Beef was my favorite. If I could figure out how to make such a light flakey top, I would make this all the time. I really loved it! We save room for dessert and then we couldn’t make up our mind so we ordered the Sicilian Lemon Sponge which was yummy, the Profiteroles, which I’d never had before and the Banoffee Cheesecake… which was also new to me. OHMY! It was heavenly! I would have more of that in a heartbeat. I guess my less than favorable meal tonight at home has me wishing that the charms of this ‘pub down the road’ was closer to home. Thanks for sharing a little taste of England with a stranger…

This pub is located just off the roundabout next to Newton St Loe, on the outskirts of Bath proper as you head towards Bristol. I used to go to Bath Spa Uni, just up the road, so I got to know this place pretty well over the course of my degree. There’s a range of good quality beers, ales and wines available from the bar and in the summer the pub garden is a great place to relax. They also serve a pretty extensive menu of posh pub grub, which is a little on the expensive side, in my opinion. The last time I ate here I was served some raw chicken. I hate complaining, but I just asked if they could replace it, but instead they just shoved it back in the oven for a bit and gave it back to me a few minutes later. Not so great. Still, it’s a lovely place for drinking.

Very popular and busy. Not surprising really — they have got the pub grub proposition down to a fine art. Food is goodish and reasonably priced. Good size car-park which is always pretty full. Family friendly but there are enough nooks and crannies if you require a little privacy. Staff are excellent despite it being busy.
