We passed by this bakery in Sesimbra, and I noticed a sign in the window above some delicious-looking cakes called farinha torrada. It said that these cakes were a local speciality of Sesimbra, so of course we had to go in and try some. When we walked in, the place was filled with people hanging out. I’m not sure if this place is a bakery, bar, coffee shop, or all of the above. We ordered two farinha torrada cakes to go and ate them while walking back to our hotel on the beach. O. M. G. This stuff’s DELICIOUS!!! Very chewy like a blondie, and chock full of flavor. I did some research online later on farinha torrada, and turns out it dates back to the 19th century, when fisherman from Sesimbra village used to take these to sea because they were dry and durable. I guess it began as a home remedy for ailments like constipation and cough, too. The cake is made of wheat flour, eggs, chocolate, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon zest, and it tastes absolutely scrumptious! I went back again the next day to try to buy some more, but they were all sold out. :(
