Excellent restaurant.

Can’t think of anything to complain about but plenty to praise. The waiter was friendly and helpful. The portions were huge and excellently prepared. The place was full but we never felt neglected.

3.5 stars Another Porto institution. It’s always busy & for good reason. They are serving up traditional Portuguese food from steak to chicken to sausage to bacalao. Their caldo verde was great. I had a steak that was served to me tableside on a sizzling platter. Great presentation & great steak. It also came with an assortment of Portuguese sausages which were delicious. One of which was the very traditional alheira which tastes great but unfortunately I’m not a fan of the texture… a bit too soft for me. Probably because of the bread that’s also mixed into the sausage. My wife had the bacalao fritters/cakes & she was unimpressed. Texture was a bit soggy; you expect a bit of a crust on the outside of a fish or crab cake. And the flavor was lacking. At best, she said it tasted like average battered fish. While one dish was a bit disappointing, it was still on the short lists to return to because the rest of the food was great, service was top notch, and the prices were very very good.

Traditional Portuguese food in a 75 year old institution, served family style to locals, groups, and tourists by very friendly multi-lingual waiters. We went all/in: Bacalhau, roasted goat, caldo verde… A good experience but nothing gourmet here. Glad we visited but once is enough.

Bön accueil et service. Beau choix de menu avec plats typiquement portugais. Carte des vins raisonnable. L’éclairage pourrait être revu à la baisse.

Uma excelente opção no centro do Porto. O serviço é atencioso. A comida é boa e é servida com generosidade. As sopas são excelentes. As saladas bem servidas. A carta de vinhos é agradável e tem preços aceitáveis. Recomendo os bacalhaus, os filetes, o polvo. Comam o entrecôte de boi fatiado. Diz que é para dois mas dá para três. É ir e voltar.

Highly overrated I think. We(myself, wife and 2 friends) were recommended here by our host and had high hopes. First impression on entering is that it’s a very large restaurant, two levels with a central cavernous area. The vibe is bustling with waiters running to and fro. In some areas the tables are lined against rustic natural stone walls. In the hither regions where we were seated, the ceilings are low and the lighting harsh. The menu is very traditional Portuguese. We started with an assortment of breaded fried appetizers which were pretty tasty. For mains we had cod(bacalau), grilled octopus, and black pork with piri piri. The portions were large but the food all average at best. Pork far overcooked, chewy and tough(but did come with a good piri piri sauce). Cod was mostly potato topped with shredded cheese. Octopus was not bad, a large portion, but not as good as what I’d been eating at simple little hole-in-wall places in Lisbon. Overall impression of food is that which is being pumped out too fast by an overworked kitchen. Service friendly but hectic and distracted. Touristy touristy, riding on past rep.

This restaurant came highly recommended by a local. The portions are very generous, and the service was very good, but the taste of the food was just average.

An experience so welcoming and tasty, we returned twice in a week. If you’re drinking wine(and you should), ask for Pedro(the sommelier) to help you navigate the terrific list. Tough to go wrong here.

This place has been around since 1939. That in of itself should say something. The portions are huge, relatively speaking. It’s good for families and large groups as it’s quite boisterous in there. It’s tucked away in an alley which could make it a little difficult to find. Give this place a try, you’ll be pleased you did.

It’s in all the tour books and for good reason. They serve up traditional Portuguese cuisine that’s probably akin to their version of comfort food more so than fine dining, with reasonably good service, and at fair prices. I have eaten here at least once on every trip to this charming and picturesque city and area. It’s on a side street in the center in which you can hear a pin drop. Other than from the Metro at Aliados, getting there from other Metro stations is more circuitous. Abadia means abbey and that’s sort of what it feels like as you walk through the vaulted entry portico. The restaurant has a lower level and a quieter loft-like upper level. The place feels airier than an abbey could ever be, and probably better illuminated than one as well. Dishes run the gamut from fish(lots of bacalhau, or cod, recipes), poultry, and meat, though I didn’t scour for vegetarian options. Since Portuguese restaurants tend to serve omelets all day, they might have omelet choices that might fit the bill. Now, if you’re a vegan, why would you be going to Portugal anyway? Sorry, but I couldn’t resist. A typical meal might feature a tasty bowl of soup, like caldo verde, bread rolls and butter, a main cod entrée with vegetables, potatoes, and/or rice, a dessert such as flan or chocolate mousse, and a beverage. The price is not bad for a restaurant that both tourists and locals alike have kept humming for decades. The waiter had worked there for over 30 years! Note that, as is the case with almost all locally run non-chain Portuguese restaurants, they have this weird custom of bringing out a dish of cheeses, olives, ham, and other appetizers, which have you thinking«wow.» Don’t be wowed. Each item costs extra and they are not cheap. After they have been placed on your table for 10 or so minutes, tell your waiter«nao quiero» or «nao desejo,» followed by «obrigado.» Off they go. Done deal! This restaurant is, in one word, reliable.
