Café Majestic

A tourist trap clad in a beautiful piece of architecture. The clientele may have once been made up of Porto’s high society but nowadays the place is thronged with people in shorts and sunnies. My coffee was decent enough but my ‘nata’ (traditional custard tart) was possibly the worst I’ve ever had. The building definitely deserves a look, the café, on the other hand…

This place is absolutely beautiful. However, it is extremely touristy and the prices reflect that. The food/​coffee compared to many of the other restaurants we went to in Porto was sub-​par. It is worth going to see this beautiful café, even if you simply walk by.

It was nice inside but too expensive and low quality food. Especially the pasta with seafood (€ 19) stinked and the dish was too small compare to the price. If you have too much time and money then i recommand here but if not…

Located downtown, in one of the several streets where no cars are allowed, Majestic Café is a tourist must stop both for its rich history — shown in its architecture and design — as well as it’s yummy treats. Their toasted croissants with some ham and cheese are to die for and their bicas (sorry Porto, alfacinha de coração, hehe) are just right for that after lunch or after dinner taste. Every server I’ve ever had has been overly pleasant and helpful, but it’s just not a place I hang out that much as a local, since it is a bit pricey and it will add up quickly.

The Majestic Café, designed by architect João Queiróz in the nineteen twenties, is still today one of the most beautiful and meaningful examples of Art Nouveau in Porto. I may have missed a few of those striking details because I was distracted by my friend’s Audrey Hepburn-​style beauty. The servers were gracious even though we arrived right before they closed. Majestic’s classic French toast was perfectly light and at the same time impossibly rich. It made for an unexpectedly epic and decadent midnight snack.
I thought their café con leche was on point. On the restaurant’s website, Gloria Montenegro, President of the Paris Academy of Coffeeology, is quoted saying, «The Majestic Café is a wonderful place, where muses, thinkers and artists can get together to live the best moments life has to offer: simply sharing communication through words and gestures, glances, smiles and even a few tears sometimes.» I don’t see why not. My friend and I shared «Rabanadas» Majestic Style, and it was pretty amazing.

Um dos ex-​libris da cidade do Porto. Um espaço clássico com um ambiente que já não se encontra em nenhum lado.
Verdade seja que é mais um «tourist-​trap» do que propriamente um local aonde se possa ir tomar um café. Isto porque o preço elevado não se traduz na qualidade.
O ideal neste espaço é mesmo poder tomar um chá ou mesmo um capilé que é um dos melhores que já tomei.

Innen drinnen herrlicher Jugendstil, livrierte KellnerInnen, sehr gediegene Atmosphäre. Die Preise für portugiesische Verhältnisse doch sehr hoch. Der von mir georderte Käsekuchen mit einem Glas 10-​jährigen Vintage Port schlug mit 11 € zu Buche. Ja, ja werden viele sagen, aber bei uns würde das x kosten. Stimmt, aber wir sind in Porto und nicht in Paris, Wien oder London. Das Stück Käsekuchen war sehr übersichtlich, schmeckte langweilig und das Heidelbeerkompott-​kleckschen und die Minze rissen es auch nicht mehr raus.
Die Crème Brulee meiner Freundin hatte keine Kruste.
Bedienung: sehr freundlich und mehrerer Sprachen mächtig.
Fazit: sehr schöner Touristenladen für diejenigen, die solche wunderbaren Jugendstil Läden nicht kennen. Muss man mal gemacht haben.

Le café le plus chère de toutes la ville voir du Portugal mais le cadre est magnifique et le service impeccable.

Very classy!!! The service is exceptional. We had only French toast which was the best I’ve ever tried (and I’m not fond of it very much) and cheese cake with red fruits. Well, the cake tasted more salty than sweet and I didn’t like it very much. But Porto they served was really good!
I’ll go there again and try something else (must give them another chance).

Lieu magique, ça vaut le coup de rentrer juste pour l’atmosphère !
Nous nous sommes arrêté pour prendre un café, chocolat chaud mais avons craqué sur place pour leur spécialité: le pain perdu, très bon !
Les boissons étaient aussi à tomber.
Le service est impeccable, souriant et aimable.
Le prix est un peu élevé mais se justifie par le lieux.

Fomos com algo em mente, a Rabanada!!! Valeu a visita, o logar é lindo e o doce delicioso. Tomei um vinho do Porto towny para acompanhar e minha esposa um chá de baunilha. Visita obrigatória!!!

Definitely pricy but you go there for the décor and atmosphere. :) Service was very good. Recommend going there for tea or coffee.

Cada ciudad tiene locales a los que hay que ir sí o sí y el Majestic es uno de ellos. El servicio, la decoración, el ambiente… y los precios, te harán sentir como un miembro de la aristocracia portuguesa al menos durante un rato. Puedes comer, tomar un café o pedir un postre, cada uno con la posibilidad de maridarlo con uno de los vinos Porto recomendados. En fin, aunque la comida es normal (aunque presentada de manera excelente) y te gastarás un buen dinerillo, vale la pena entrar para al menos tomar algo y experimentar esa grandiosidad que alguna vez ostentó Portugal en el pasado mezclada con la nostalgia decadente de la actualidad.

Yes it’s overpriced but the quality, service and surroundings make up for it all!
If you go for tea time ask for «Rabanada» a sort of delicious French toast covered with egg cream and nuts! Superb!

C’est une institution de presque 100 ans, tous les guides de la ville s’arrêtent devant, et on comprend pourquoi ! La beauté des espaces (salles, jardin d’hiver), du mobilier et de la vaisselle, le service proposé et l’ambiance «belle époque». Evidemment il y a énormément de touristes, certains n’entrent que pour pendre des photos, mais on y croise aussi les habitués.

Worst café in my trip to Europe. I thought it would be charming but I was so embarrassed I bought my partner here. Bad food — really bad — as in boring and plain and expensive. Dumb

A café with a great ambiance from the high days of Portugal. The design is wonderful and I’d recommend to have a drink and enjoy slowly and relaxed.

Tradition can also become an enemy e.g. when reflected too much in the menu or the interior decoration of a restaurant especially when located in a tourist hotspot as Porto. This is certainly not the case for the Majestic Café where the interior adds to the charm of the service provided by the skilled staff. The café is both a great place to relax with a drink and to have an excellent evening dinner. The portions can be called of a traditional size and the quality and selection of dishes probably appeal to diners of all ages. The fish soup (Sopa de Frutos do Mar) was nicely presented (see photo) and the Magret de Canard (duck) was of a generous size not uncommon in modern portugese restaurants. The Jardin the Salmao resembled a rose garden and was both soft and delicious. The Tagliatelle Marisco with Tiger Prawn was yummie although the pasta deserved some sauce not to become too dry. The desserts with proposed port types are great for those interested to sample port while in Porto and doing so in combination with a fine selection of desserts. Although our experience was limited to the cheese selection (15 €) with the proposed port to be included for an additional 5 € various other combinations were on offer.

I’ve always loved this café, and I still remember fondly coming here with my mother after school. Nowadays it’s always packed with tourists any day, any time of the day, but you shouldn’t let this put you off, especially if you’ve never been here before.
The interiors are absolutely stunning and elegant, a true Art Nouveau café, and the service and presentation are made to match. Prices have always been high, but with the advent of tourism are slightly higher now — I’d hardly call them a rip off though, this place is well worth it for the experience. There’s also a piano and live music on occasion, plus a small art gallery downstairs.
I wouldn’t say this is a good place for lunch or dinner, in fact as far as I can remember they only started introducing salads and stuff like that to appeal to more «international» tastes — I mean, Ceasar Salad, seriously? — and that’s why I’m not giving them a five-​star review.
My favourite item on the menu is their very thick and absolutely delicious hot chocolate, I’d recommend it on a cold rainy afternoon.

If you want to get a feel about how it must have been during Portugal’s high times of colonialism you have to visit this place! They have also a very tasty deli sandwich!!!

Excellent place to go to sit down and drink a cup of coffee verrrrrrrry slowly (as they are quite expensive; you pay for the atmosphere.) Enjoy the chairs, walls, bar, and uniformed waitstaff (anachronistically armed with wireless devices to punch in orders from afar.)
According to our walking-​tour-​guide, JK Rowling wrote significant portions of Harry Potter in this café whilst living in Porto, away from her estranged husband. (There are several more JK Rowling venues to visit in Porto, like the Lello Bookstore.)

This is definitely a very beautiful café; however, I would only recommend coming here for happy hour and not a meal. Some people also just walk in to take pictures and then leave.
Coincidentally, it was happy hour when I dined here. 5 euros for a HUGE sangria, that was really delicious! The glass was almost the size of my face!
We ordered:
Linguine al Nero con Gamberi Gigante — It comes with 2 giant tiger prawns! The noodles are made with squid ink and garlic. There’s no sauce or any other seafood. It was pretty good, but I was expecting more sauce and other vegetables/​seafood to eat with my noodles.
Duck Magret perfumed with Port wine — This was misleading. I thought it was made with a Port wine and pineapple/​strawberry sauce since it comes with pineapple and strawberry in the description. The duck was good, but nothing special. The port wine taste was very strong.
Tripe «Oporto style» — I’m not a huge fan of tripe, but this was an interesting dish. It was made with rice and beans. It was decent, definitely a unique dish and something I’ll probably never get a chance to eat again. If you like beans and tripe, then this is perfect for you.
Overall, the food was decent. But for the price and quality of the meal, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Beautiful Belle Epoque café and worth a visit though the food is merely OK. We had melon with ham that was actually very good but the chicken caesar salad was poor. Coffee was pretty good. If you exit the café, turn right and go 2 blocks you come to a little church faced with impressive blue tiles.

Superbe endroit, sa décoration et ses banquettes/​chaises au cuir magnifiquement travaillé font qu’on se sent dans une autre époque.
Et le service est bien sur au top !!

Recomendo provar a «Rabanada envolta em ovos moles».

Should I write a review if I have waited for a long time and left, because no waiter showed up? Well, I guess so… first you stand in front on the door on the outside waiting to be let in and then you wait. No, thanks.

Hm. Irgendwie muss ich meiner Vorrednerin zunächst widersprechen.
Am ersten Tag eines Städtetrips laufe ich gerne schon mal unvorbereitet einfach so durch die Stadt und lasse mich ein wenig treiben um so Eindrücke von einem Ort aufsaugen zu können, ohne das schon im Vorfeld ein gewisser Sättigungsgrad durch Reiseführer-​Wissen erreicht ist. Und so bin nachmittags eher zufällig ins Majestic gestolpert, um den ersten Tag in Porto ein wenig Revue passieren zu lassen. Ich hatte Glück, weil gerade als ich das Café betreten habe ein Tischchen an den Seitenbänken frei geworden ist.
Das Café ist von innen tatsächlich in einem prunkvollen Jugendstil-​Dekor eingerichtet, am Nachmittag war es ein wenig dämmrig, was ganz gut passte. Insgesamt ist das Interieur ein wenig batteredbei Kleidung könnte man abgetragen sagen. Die Bausubstanz allerdings ist einfach toll. Die Kellner waren geschäftig und nicht für eine Untertahltung zu haben, aber keineswegs unfreundlich verständlich so gut wie der Laden gefüllt war. Der Schokoladenkuchen den ich hatte war brutal schokoladig, aber in einer guten Art und Weise. Der Espresso war auch sehr gut, die Preise der beiden Sachen durchaus vertretbar.
Das Publikum. Ja, es sind Touristen dort gewesen. Besonders nervig waren die sechs — portugiesischen Renterhipster, die nacheinander mit ihren Spiegelreflexkameras von einer Ecke in die nächste gehetzt sind um auch ja aus jeder Sicht zu fotografieren um im Anschluss alle Bilder direkt zu vergleichen. Trotzdem hatte ich den Eindruck, dass mindestens zwei Drittel der Besucher Einheimische wie die 20 Jugendlichen waren, die ihren Schulabschluss (?) mit einer Runde sehr großer Milchshakes gefeiert haben.
Mir hat es gut gefallen. Da wir direkt um die Ecke im Hotel waren, haben wir kurzerhand am nächsten Tag unser Frühstück im Majestic einnehmen wollen. GROßER Fehler. Frühstück EXTREM teuer, und diesmal hatten wir auch eine unmögliche Kellnerin. Hat uns den teuer bezahlten Sekt des Frühstücks erst einmal gar nicht gebracht, weil sie meinte, Sekt würden wir wohl nicht trinken (ihre Aussage). Winziger Joghurt, eine Scheibe Brot, ein Brötchen, eine Scheibe Wurst/​Käse: 15EURp. P
Fazit: Für einen Kaffee nachmittags gerne und wieder, Frühstück bloß nicht.
Erstes Erlebnis: 4*, zweites 2,5*. Insgesamt 3*

Idéal pour un petite collation dans l’après-midi, en terrasse
Des pasteis de nata à tomber, un service très agréable, et surtout un cadre inhabituel!
Et petit bonus: le pianiste qui reprend des grands standards de la chanson, de la pop internationale à Walt Disney! Très rigolo!
Seul petit bemol: le lieu est assez touristique, et les prix né sont pas forcément très bon marché, mais à faire au moins une fois!

Si il y a un café a voir a Porto c’est celui là. Il est juste sublime avec ses miroirs et son lustre. Leurs milk shake sont extras et surtout leur pasteis de nata. Et surtout il y a un pianiste qui nous fait croire qu’on passé un moment privilégié. Evidemment c’est tres touristique et donc les prix sont assez élevés.

Fantástico! Vale a pena visitar, provavelmente um dos melhores e mais bonitos espaços do Porto.

Vale pelo local, pela excelente recuperação que fizeram do antigo café, sem dúvida o mais bonito de Portugal!

ich bin auch eher für die kleinen Cafés, aber das Café Majestic ist schon ein Augenschmaus! Wir sind da reingegangen und haben nur uuaaahhh gesagt und große Augen gemacht. Es ist schon schön anzusehen und einen Besuch wert :)

Ich kann mich nicht mehr erinnern, wie mein Kaffee hier war, aber das Majestic ist zweifellos ein absolutes Must wenn man in Porto ist! Nur wenige Orte hier verkörpern Portos Aura von vergangenem Glanz und dekadentem Charme besser als dieses Café.
Und ich werde jetzt nicht alles aufzählen, was besonders gut in dieses Art Deco-​Ambiente passt, sondern lieber was nicht so gut passt: Nichts.

Und dabei ist das Majestic keine Touristenfalle, sondern ein sehr professionell geführtes Lokal, in dem man seine Bestellung schnell aufgeben und ebenso schnell erhalten kann.
Natürlich ist das Majestic keine Frittenbude und den Kaffee für 80 Cent kann man hier gleich knicken trotzdem: Einen kaffee und was Süßes sollte man sich hier gönnen!

Bei gutem Wetter kann man auch versuchen einen Sitzplatz im Freien zu ergattern aber drinnen sitzen lohnt sich!
FAZIT:
Hingehen!

Nachdem wir schon einige Besichtigungen hinter uns gebracht hatten und sehr viele kleine Gassen bergauf und bergab maschiert waren, wollten wir eine Kleinigkeit essen und uns etwas ausruhen. Gleich zu Beginn der schönen und breiten Einkaufsstrasse Rua de Santa Catarina war das Portal des Cafes Majestic nicht zu übersehen, waren begeistert, denn dort wollten wir eigentlich hin, hatten aber keine Lust mehr lange zu suchen.
Wir hatten Glück war ein Tisch das heißt eigentlich 2 Tische nebeneinander frei. Sind sehr kleine runde Kaffeehaustische und für 4 Personen brauchten wir schon 2 Tische.
Im wunderschönen Innenraum wäre auch noch ein größerer Tisch frei gewesen, mir hätte es gut gefallen, aber die Männer wollten im Freien sitzen und etwas sehen.
Obwohl wir nur Kleinigkeiten bestellt hatten, kam der Ober und deckte die kleinen, runden Marmortische sehr nett mit weißen Tischtüchern, Stoffservietten und Besteck. Fanden wir schon sehr positiv, außerdem war das Service zuvorkommend und sehr nett.
Geschmeckt hat es auch, über den Preis kann ich nichts sagen, habe ja nicht bezahlt :-)
Hat uns sehr gut gefallen und haben schön die Zeit überbrückt, denn ich wollte ja noch unbedingt auf den Torre dos Clérigos (75,60 m hoch und 240 steile Stufen, dafür ein Traumblick von oben) und der öffnete erst wieder um 14 Uhr.

Ich fand das Café Majestic sehr schön. Jedoch habe ich dort einen der schlechtesten Espressos Portugals getrunken. selbstverständlich zu Touristenpreisen Mir war also sofort klar warum alle Einheimischen lieber in das unscheinbare Café gegenüber gegegangen sind.

Beautiful jugendstil Brasserie (café and restaurant) with a lot of mirrors and classy waiters. In the main shopping street smack in the centre of town. Not cheap and a limited menu, but worth going to — if only to look at the people passing by. Good salads and wines.

Altehrwürdige Originaleinrichtung von 1921 — sehenswerter Augen-​und Fotoschmaus für Nostalgiker! Die uniformierten Bedienungen servieren bei dezenter Hintergrundmusik unterschiedlich flink, aber freundlich. — Nicht eben preisgünstig und die Speisekarte ist –Café-​gemäss — leider eher klein. Wer aber wenigstens 3.– für ein Bier anlegen mag, dem soll der Besuch empfohlen sein!
