I’m very surprised about the high rating of this place!!! Why??? We came here after we red reviews. Ordered tacos samplers $ 22. The meat seemed old, and tasted like it was microwaved not once. Tortillas were hard and old. Margarita was too sweet! I don’t know why we didn’t returned this dish and decided just pay and run from this place. Big disappointment, after a our experience of the good Puerto Rican’s food. The stuff was very nice though.

Tomate is hands down THEPLACE to go in Puerto Rico. I come here religiously when I am on the island and literally every time I come here it gets better. Where do I start? Well the atmosphere is fantastic. Very chill and open with great décor. Not a very big place but it is utilized perfectly. They are a «Mexican fusion» restaurant with a spin on classics. You won’t get tex mex in here. This is authentic cuisine. The margaritas are absolutely to die for. I go with a coconut margarita each time! The food is out of this world. From the tacos to the fajitas to the house made ceviche. Whatever you choose you will not be disappointed. Today was the first time I tried the ceviche and I am so angry that it took me so many times coming here to try it! But hey better late than never! Felipe, the owner, is such an amazing man. He has done a phenomenal job or acquiring staff that has the same passion as he does. He would go above and beyond for any of his guests and truly makes you feel like that, a guest and not a customer. If there is only one place you HAVE to go to on the island, it is Tomate!

The ingredients are FRESH, the food is FLAVORFUL, the tequila selection is ENCYCLOPEDIC, the dining room is CLEAN and brightly lit, the atmosphere is casual and RELAXED, the prices are RESONABLE, and the service leaves nothing to be desired. Top notch!

BEST service! Our waiter AND waitress were both very friendly and attentive. The carnitas tacos were perfect and the watermelon mint margarita with Tajin is my new favorite. Thank you for the great dining experience!

5 stars. Late Saturday night and we had been Unilocaling for good mexican food in Puerto Rico because we simply didn’t want anymore empanadas. I saw the great reviews and we jumped to try it. The restaurant was empty pero it was like we had the sweet girls(servers) all to ourselves, so no worries. The girls that helped us were just so nice, helpful, and fun. Thanks girls. The owner even jotted in a joke or two. We had tacos, pretty good. I’d give the tacos 4 stars, bc I love love love tacos and they could have been made with a tad more love pero they were still good. We had the Margarita sampler, which is a must… Sooo yummy. Thank you thank you for a good meal and good service!!! They also have brunch on sunday which we may just return to tomorrow to try.

Staff was amazing ! Very caring for there customers. The food i would actually give 3 stars. It is very creative but the food was mostly dry and overcooked. Still enjoyed the atmosphere and again the staff is what made it.

Great margaritas and service. I tired the sampler which is 8 different margarita flavors with either regular or spicy salt around. Deelicious! The chips and salsa are a must have too– the salsa is homemade and served hot, tasty! Great service, ask for Christian!

While in PR you have to visit Tomato. The food is great and the service is phenomenal. My girlfriend and I ordered the Margarita flight which included 8 samples of various fruit margaritas. All of the samples were really good. This was one of our best dining experiences while in PR. I would definitely recommend this establishment to future travelers.

My fellow Unilocalers let me down once again. Although there was Good service and restaurant was clean, food was just«ok» at best. I can tell they tried to make their tacos more interesting with fruits and seasonings but i’va had better fresher ingredients on the mainland. Try the pasco taco fried fish was fresh and seasoned well. El pastor was tasty but pollo was blah. I would go back for the margaritas tho!

Best Mexican place I’ve been to in maybe ever. We went here on the last night of our vacation and I was sad we didn’t find it sooner because we would have been there nightly. We had guac, tacos, empanadas, and more and everything was equally amazing. We also eat a lot of Mexican normally so was surprised to find it beat out my favorite DC and NY spots. Their drinks were amazing as well, and all the servers were very enjoyable.

Four stars for food, five stars for service! Came to Tomate after searching Unilocal for a 4star+ restaurant near our hotel in Isla Verde. Tomate fit the bill, so off we were. We were immediately seated upon walking into the restaurant. Our waiter Christian, was super attentive from the very beginning. He took our drink order immediately and brought us chips and salsa. He also patiently waited as we made our final menu decisions. After looking at pictures from reviews, I knew I wanted the fish tacos. I also wanted to try the Al Pastor tacos as I recently had some at a different restaurant that were amazing. My mom also ordered the fish tacos. The fish tacos were 3 for $ 11.95– not bad! The al pastor taco was $ 4.25. Christian saw our empty basket of chips and immediately brought out new chips and fresh salsa. We were starving, so we stuffed our faces and finished the second basket. Our food came out next. Christian also brought us more chips and salsa– completely unnecessary but much appreciated as they were delicious! The fish tacos were awesome! The guacamole and pickled cabbage on top were delicious. The chucks of fried fish were also huge and amazing. Yum! The al pastor tacos weren’t bad, not my favorite though. Once we were done with our meal, Christian brought us complimentary Rumchata shots with cinnamon– super sweet of him! They were also quite tasty! Overall a great experience.

SOMUCHAMAZING. We sat at the bar because that’s just our thing. Amber, who was amazing, was our bartender. She gave us tips on the area and all that we can do(what was worth it, what wasn’t). We ordered the margarita sampler which included 8 margarita samples(shot size) for $ 18. All the juices used for the margaritas are fresh squeezed, juiced, and strained. Passion fruit chipotle and lime jalapeño were my favorites. Mango chipotle was INCREDIBLY spicy, but delicious. We ordered the queso fondue as appetizer, which was a melty bowl of cheesy goodness. My boyfriend and I both ordered the steak tacos and we both were drooling over how everything just melted into your mouth. Finally, we ordered dessert. A whole shot of liquor in each. My favorite was the kahlua dessert! Everything was perfect from the service to the food to the atmosphere!

The food was unimpressive. I’ve had better chicken tacos at a food truck. Cheese dip was just a giant glob of melted cheese that congealed quickly. Credit card machine didn’t work.

Not to sound snooty but Isla Verde is not my typical speed, too many tourists and high rises. I should have gone with my gut and skipped this place. I’m shocked at all of the rave reviews. While our server was friendly, he was also making drinks for the entire restaurant. Everything was just a bit off. The ceviche was too sweet, my fiancé’s skirt steak was rubbery and my Pulpo special was pretty bland. The only saving graces were the watermelon mint margaritas and the hot salsas. Based on this experience I would not return.

My girlfriend and I stayed in Isla Verde in Carolina. We walked by this restaurant and my girlfriend just felt like we needed to try this place out. Man was she right, we went in for brunch on Valentine’s Day and it was amazing. We both enjoyed our meals. I had the Los Huevos with Bacon and I don’t remember what my girlfriend had but I remember her letting me try it and it was great. Both plates were delicious. Our waiter, Christian was amazing too, he was friendly, funny and quick. Definitely earned his tip. We also had the bottomless mimosas, which were amazing. You could taste the champagne and you could taste how fresh the orange juice was. To top it off we had these dessert shots, my girlfriend had this tres leche cake and I had this chocolate cake with chocolate mousse. Both were amazing but I’d recommend the tres leche cake over what I got haha.

Buen servicio, limpio, cómodo y ambiente acogedor. Nos sentamos justo al lado de la cocina y no sentimos olores y/o ruido innecesario. Lo mejor? La comida es rica, está bien presentada, hay variedad de opciones vegetarianas y todo es fresco.

We read the reviews on Unilocal for this place so decided to check it out. We Had two tacos. I had the skirt steak and chorizo ones and my mom had just the skirt steak. We ordered a side of guacamole to go with them. The meal came with chips and salsa tomatillo and another one I liked best that was mildly sweet and spicy. Tacos were smaller then we thought they would be, but with the addition of the guacamole were really good. I ordered a watermelon mint margarita. It is made with fresh watermelon juice and chopped mint, and served scratch over ice with a spicy sugar rim. It was awesome! Not a big mint fan but this combo just works and is so refreshing! The service was great! We had a new waiter but he worked hard and the cook even came out to talk to us. Unfortunately I don’t speak Spanish so I really have no idea what he was saying. I gave him a big thumbs up about the food though and he seemed very happy with that so he must’ve understood we liked them. Food in PR is expensive. Our meal cost about $ 40.00’with tip for four tacos, guacamole, and one margarita. That’s actually about the norm and maybe a bit cheaper then other locations. Overall I enjoyed this place and would go back again. Especially at 6pm as they have margaritas for $ 4.75 when they are usually $ 8.00.

My boyfriend came here around 11pm since it was one of the only places open near the airport. They notified us that their kitchen was closed and could only serve three types of tacos: Chicken, Steak, and Al Pastor. Naturally, we ordered all three. Tomate is generous with their meat servings– we definitely got a fair meat-tortilla ratio. However, we soon found out why. We were charged $ 9 for each order of two tacos, except for the chicken. It was«happy hour» for margaritas($ 5 each) and the Chicken tacos($ 4 each order). For tacos, this is VERY pricey. Plus, I’m from Cali where you could find amazing tacos for cheap. It would have made more sense if the tacos were actually delicious, but they were bland. We asked for hot sauce and basically drenched our tacos in sauce.

Food: I shared the Tacos Sampler with a friend. It consists of 5 different tacos with a side of refried beans. Most of the tacos were tasteless and dry. I recommended ordering a side of guacamole and sour cream and asking for hot sauce. — Al Pastor: marinated pork with pineapple, onions, and cilantro. 3.5÷5 — Skirt Steak: skirt steak with onions and cilantro. 3⁄5 — Fish: fried breaded fish with purple cabbage, onions, and cilantro. 4⁄5 — Carnitas: shredded pork with onions and cilantro. 3⁄5 — Duck: duck with Mandarin oranges and sauce. 3⁄5 Service: Friendly. 4⁄5 Final Thoughts: If I were to come back here, I would definitely go for the fish tacos next time. It was the only taco that I enjoyed out of the 5.
