I love my fish and chip shops by the beach so I can order and walk back and chill watching the sunset over some greasies. For this reason I find Gulf Takeaways to be a tease — you can see the Hauraki Gulf from the top of East Coast Road, but the closest beach is still five minutes away by car. But all that’s a slight inconvenience in the face of this place being my favourite fish and chip shop on the North Shore. It’s got a big gaudy sign on the outside with ‘best fish and chips in town’ written on it, and it aint lying. Your best bet is crumbed snapper — it aint greasies in the traditional sense — it’s not all that oily, and it’s always tasty as! Also because it’s on an arterial road rather than in a town centre the wait time isn’t as bad as the more popular places.
