Just booked my flights to New Zealand and have literally planned day one around getting a steak and cheese pie at Greenland bakery. I can’t even wait!

This review is less about the bakery, and more about their award winning pie Feeling like I’m a pretty big fan of pies and recalling they won the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Award, a recent thread here on Unilocal reminded me I need to go check the pie out… after all Botany is my local! First impression the place is not as nice as Ronnies(100m around the corner) as far as cattle class cafes go… the décor is far more plastic tray and RSA feeling. So I ended up grabbing a pie and sitting outside… but the outlook is the carpark. The service is pretty vacant and minimal. The counter staff was fast, efficient with no small talk or a smile. The pies didn’t even look as good as BP station pies… it was more in the class of a 4 square pie warmer at 6pm on a Sunday afternoon. So I was praying the filling would blow me away. I went for a basic mince and cheese… which was $ 5. The filling is nice but McDonalds Georgie pie comeback is way better, the crust is light and flakey and buttery but its not as good as Muzza’s(in Howick and Mt Albert)… at least the temperature was spot on, and it wasn’t greasy so I didn’t feel that sense of regret after eating it. Should anyone be saying this is the best pie in Auckland? no… not by a long shot… maybe in a different filling… but like for like… this Mince and cheese isn’t even close. Its certainly not gourmet looking but the price tag is almost there.

No, you haven’t stepped into the arctic, though on a winter’s day it may feel like it! Rather a delicious smelling Bakery, Greenland is a great little café hiding near the New World in Botany Town Centre. It has a long line of cabinets containing only fresh products of savouries, sweet treats, sandwiches, panini’s and muffins. They completely ace breakfasts — not only the cheapest you can find in Botany, but absolutely scrummy! I would recommend snabbing a bacon and egg muffin, a flat white and a neenish tart for lunch sometime. You wont regret it and it will be around $ 10 for all of that! Great prices and good service make this place my usual pick for lunchtime meetings.
