If I’m in Devonport, I’ll pop in to see what’s new. Today I learnt they did chocolate classes, why didn’t I know that? At $ 140 for a three hour class I initially thought that was pretty pricey, but reading the details you get a goodie bag(value $ 89) so maybe not too bad after all. The chocolates are also up there price wise, but you can’t deny the chocolate is indeed well tempered and the fillings as described. Just the one today, a milk chocolate and espresso. Yum

You’re either born with a sweet tooth, or you’re not, you can’t make someone love sweets and chocolates if it is just not your thing. Fortunately, I was born with a whole set of sweet teeth, and I loooove chocolate. So while browsing in Devo the other day, I popped into the local chocolatier, known simply as Devonport Chocolates. You obviously don’t need a fancy French name if your products are really good. The choccies were absolutely delish, and I munched away on the samples on display. Not wanting to look like too much of an opportunist, I decided it would be a clever move to buy a few for later.(Later being 5 minutes later) The difference between handmade chocolate and mass produced slabs, is the flavour and the aroma of the chocolate. Each taste is a sensation, and the flavour simply melts into your mouth, allowing your brain to feel the pleasure, bite for bite.

These people really have a high appreciation of chocolate. I usually mentally categorize chocolate as junk food — which most of the stuff you buy at the supermarket or service station is, artificially produced, packed with preservatives. Great fun to visit a shop who takes chocolate production to the next level. It reminded me of the movie ‘Chocolate’, beautifully hand made chocolate, which they actually make in the store everyday. Chocolate actually tastes a lot better when it has been produced with care, the chocolate here tastes amazing. Great store which reminded me to sit down and wholly appreciate how delicious chocolate is.

One place I always missed when I left London was ‘Hotel Chocolate’ — it was boutique chocolate store on High Street Kensington with the yummiest of chocolate. Then I found this place one Sunday in Devonport and I must say it is equally as good as the place in London. Like a lot of high end stores, you don’t come here everyday, it’s just a treat now and again. As regards the quality of the chocolate, it’s rich and wonderful. There really is a big difference between this kind of chocolate and what you get in a dairy — with the exception of Whitakers of course as thats lovely stuff. You might not come across this shop if you were in Devonport as it’s slighty off the beaten track. It is well worth a visit though as it’s the perfect indulgence to those of us with a sweet tooth.

Selling all kinds of chocolate under the sun, Devonport Chocolates is a must for chocoholics. They handmake their chocolates daily and at this shop, they have a window where you can actually see the chocolate being made by the people at the back. Very cool! Ranging from white to dark and with all sorts of fillings and garnishes, you’re sure to find something delicious here. When I worked at the ferry company, we used to come here on our breaks and the lovely lady used to give us daily samples of their chocolate. We ended up buying stuff almost every time to keep us going through the long workday, even though they didn’t last long.

I’ve never been a huge fan of chocolate(I know, what?!) but Devonport Chocolates is more of a… gallery, which I can definitely appreciate. These are pieces of art, all hand-made and delicately crafted with the chocolate-lover’s tastes in mind. Just not mine… unless there’s coconut in it and unfortunately for me coconut doesn’t feature much here. I did however find a little honey-filled white chocolate truffle rolled in coconut which was of course delicious. At the original Devonport location there’s a viewing window from the retail shop where you can watch the delicacies being made. It’s not cheap but keep in mind its also not JUST chocolate, its a novelty! Great gift-packs already made up too so buying presents is easy.
