Damm… Whats happened here!!! Really enjoyed going to this place as live over the road, so called in last weekend and will now have to find another decent place to eat at as this place has changed completely. WTF reactivated bread… ohhh paleeese and something that looked like a science lab that produces twice filtered coffee or something along those lines,(try hard much) We’re over it … as i’m sure is everybody… Hipster heaven for some(uninterested wait staff) what lurks behind the ironic facial hair? A group of 5 of us admittedly men and late 30’s just think this place has lost direction the menu just comes across as too try hard, Personally i would prefer a 5 grain or home made fresh bagel to a slice of reactivated bread(What in gods name is that anyway) will call back in a few months to see if common sense and lack of patronage makes this place any better

After a hard day of intellectual stimulation scouring the gallery, the perfect pick me up is a good coffee. The Auckland Art Gallery Café will give you this, but beware if you want to supplement it with a bit of food, as you will walk out dazed, wondering whether you could have spent that money on your own art collectible. The space itself is great — but that is to be expected, considering the amount of money spent on the art gallery renovation. I guess the higher price for the counter food reflects the investment made in the gallery itself — although I do believe the council got better value for the gallery then my belly did out of meal I had. The service was good and the coffee came quickly, which became a problem as I got tempted to keep on getting them. It’s a nice enough place, but considering you are in the CBD there are plenty of other options.

There are actually two cafes at the Auckland Art Gallery, although the food is from the same kitchen. The main café, on the second floor, has a full range of counter food and a kitchen, whilst the coffee bar on the top floor mainly offers a few sandwiches and muffins. The food is fresh and well made, and the prices for cooked food are similar to other cafes; bizarrely the counter food seems slightly more pricy. However, I have a real beef with their prices for drinks: it’s actually a little bit obscene to charge $ 6 for a bottle of juice, especially when you have to line up for that bottle and aren’t given a glass or ice unless you specially ask for it, and that bottle is a variety of juice available from almost anywhere, usually for half the price. Unfortunately for the café, there’s simply too many other places nearby that don’t charge through the nose for drinks to make me want to stop there very often.

This Café has a gentle ambience about it; with some great big glass windows for the indoor voyeur to watch the passerbys and the active bird life outside. There is a balcony with several table and chairs, which are generally the first to be occupied in summer it seems. The coffee is pretty good, and there are some sweet treats to accompany the caffeine if you are there for quick break like I me. The service is efficient and professional, albeit a little cold, however I am reviewing this upon the occasional personal experience and will definitely go back nonetheless. The place seemed to bring about a contemplative quietude in the café, perhaps the art is stirring something up…

If you manage to get a seat on the balcony, you’re in for a real treat. I never fully appreciated how beautiful, yet tastefully understated, the new Art Gallery building is until I sat there, surrounded by trees, admiring the street view, and soothed by a more than decent coffee. The savoury cabinet food is good, but the slices and cakes seem quite overpriced, although they are exquisitely presented in a flaked-with-gold-leaf sort of way. The breakfasty menu is available all day and things have always come out competently cooked. If you bring the kids, don’t miss out on the cute, cheap snack packs they sell for them at the counter.

The Auckland Art Gallery Café has been jazzed up, much like the gallery itself. Operated by the people at Dawson’s Catering, the new café is slick — nice to look at, nice to be at and nice to indulge in what’s on offer. And what’s on offer is delicious — beautiful cakes and slices are on show, while a massive menu will keep you guessing for a while as you make your way to the front of the line. While the food is fancy and well presented, I can’t go past the trusty potato chip — the café’s rustic cut chips with tomato sauce and aioli are just what the doctor ordered.
