For some reason people seem to really rag on Reuben, and I’ve never been really clear why. I suspect because when they were a part of the old New Gallery, perhaps they didn’t quite provide what people want from a gallery café, e.g. lots of counter food that you could grab and go. Anyway, I think there’s lots of things to like about Reuben — whenever I’ve had a meal there, it’s been fresh and good without being super flashy, I like the big white room with a high stud and big windows, and I especially like being able to sit on the little balconies overlooking Khartoum Place. I’ve always found the service very friendly, although the owners are definitely a little bit idiosyncratic but I think quite charming. Finally, they also make pretty good cheese scones, which deserve a thumbs up from me.

Hidden up on the second floor in amongst beautiful trees, Reuben is a sanctuary in the middle of the city. It’s in an old building with towering ceilings and huge glass windows. I love coming here to escape a bad day at work, or if I just need some peace and quiet. If you can get a seat out on the balcony take it. It’s nice on a summer and winter’s day. They have lots of treats to choose from in their cabinet and also on the menu. The coffee isn’t perfect but does the job fine. It’s a really good way to spend a lunch hour and you can be sure you’ll go back relaxed and ready for the afternoon.
