In my head I secretly have a list of things you can wake me up for anytime. Restoran Kimberly Duck kway chap is one of these things. When I first started reading about street food recommendations for Georgetown, Penang, I knew this dish had written my name all over it. I love duck and I love noodle soup. However, somehow I did not manage to go and on my last day in Penang I was pretty full(read: super full) from all the great food and was considering skipping this. So glad I didn’t, this was together with curry mee, one my favorite things I ate in Penang, and I had many! The Unilocal listing(and other social media) list that this stall opens at 6.30 pm, I arrived at 5 pm as I had to go to the airport but decided to take a gamble: around 5.15 pm it became apparent that I was not the only one since people started gathering around the stall and at 5.30 pm the stall started serving, by 6 pm it was completely full and a line started forming outside. The soup was excellent, very complex: it has a herbal, ducky taste… Very fragant. The duck itself is juicy and there is plenty of it. However, be warned: this stall is not for the faint hearted, the bowl contains many duck«spare parts»(intestines, coagulated blood, ears,…), which makes it extra tasty and provides variation in textures but I can understand it is not for everyone. But for those who are not scared of eating it, you’ll be rewarded with a delicious bowl of duck goodness!

Lebuh Kimberly is where it is at with locals(and some adventurous tourists) and located in a good area in Georgetown for your street food fix. Restoran Kimberly has got a big presence on the street and cannot be missed. Kway Chap! Duck to be exact. Typically made of pork(but no pork in this Muslim country!), this version is quite delicious. Filled with offal(no part goes to waste!), the noodles and meat are actually quite hearty and delicious. The soup itself is made well by having the broth be made from bones of the duck. The noodles are at the right texture(just a little give!). Pretty much the only thing to get here. You tell them small, medium, and large and pay accordingly. This place is getting pretty popular with all of its blog traffic and locals alike! Visit and see what the hype is all about!

Restoran Kimberly … I guess this owner name it after the road name as it is located at Lebuh Kimberly. During the night this area is quite lively and you can see the whole stretch is filled with cars. Therefore, if you are driving you might need to search for a car lot within the vicinity. We went there on 1 of the evening and it’s drizzling as we drove around to look for a car lot. As the restaurant is all seated with people, we process to sit right opposite the restaurant. The place we seated is selling dessert/tang sui. The stall owner are so friendly and we are allowed to order foods from different stall. This place is famous for Kway Chap as usual they operate in front on the shop on the road to serve customer and take away. The Kway Chap is so different from the stores selling in singapore. Normally we had our Kway tiao separated with the ingredient and you can see what’s on the plate. Whereas the one selling in penang is all serve in a bowl. Maybe I have explained alittle more… The ingredient is chopped finely and they placed it on top the Kway Teow soup and it’s served to you. You just need a spoon to finish it all as the Kway Teow is serve in smaller/shorter. It’s always good to have a hot soup noodle on a rainy night. The soup is so yummy and it’s flavourful. If you are nearby do pop by here to try the penang Kway Chap …

If Gurney Drive is for the tourists, eateries along Lebuh Kimberly are for the locals. Restoran Kimberly is well known for their tong sui and the kueh chap stall just outside of the restaurant. I managed to Waze the location, ‘Restoran Kimberly’ and it was easy to find. As for parking, you may need to park some distance away because there’s no proper parking areas in the proximity. I feel Penang is tentatively a safer place to be compared in Kuala Lumpur. I was kinda excited to try their tong sui, I ordered a black glutinous rice tong sui. It took pretty fast to get my tong sui and it only cost less than RM3! Oh my goodness! It is really cheap. I then ordered a bowl of kuey teow soup that only cost RM3.50… I was speechless, though the portion was quite small but it was really good and worth it. Restoran Kimberly had a flow of customers coming in and out, so if you arrived and they are full, just wait a little, really it is worth the wait.

If you have never heard of Kuey Chap and want to try it, this is the place to do it. Kuey Chap is a noodle that resembles Kuey teow in consistency but is in shorter pieces, much like pan mee(pinched or ‘mitt’ version). Here in Penang the Kuey Chap is served with shredded braised duck meat in a duck soup, unlike in Sarawak where it is served with pork meat and offals. The portion of duck meat was very generous and there was a whole braised egg added in as well. The only part i didn’t enjoy were small pieces of boiled pork lard, which I ‘surgically’ removed. Other wise the dish was awesomely delicious. There is also a sweet dessert soup stall which offers drinks and several tong sui like the grass jelly in milk that I ordered. It wasn’t too sweet and was quite refeshing.
