Strolling down the promenade, I ended up at the landmark Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse which got an overhaul some 15 years ago and has since turned into a shopping complex. Yokohama is supposedly THE place at which ice cream was first introduced to the country. Naturally, the foodie in me needed to re-energize with a treat before doing any shopping in the mall. Bashamichi Ice came in sight at the right moment. It was on the ground floor in the second building; small and wedged in a corner. The décor is cutesy. There were a few seats available. The yummy: The basic ingredients in the ice cream at Bashamichi Ice are simply eggs, milk, and sugar. I appreciated their staying true to the tradition. There weren’t that many flavors to choose from on this visit. The milk ice cream looked stark but it tasted good and refreshing. Perfect amount of sweetness. The chestnut cream on top had a great consistency. It didn’t feel mushy at all. I liked the flavor and would eat it again. The lackluster: This had to be the first place in Japan where I experienced subpar service. The young lady working behind the counter carried a sulky face the entire time. An air of nonchalance was clearly displayed in front of the customers. It seemed like we were bothering her by giving her business. Not that I was expecting her to speak my language but even half a smile would have made this experience nicer. Ice cream: 4 stars. Service: 2 stars. Overall: 3 stars.
