If you have been traveling around Japan for a couple weeks, as we were, and you find yourself in the food for a more traditional American breakfast, this is definitely a place worth checking out. The servers were friendly, the music was great, and there was a large choice for breakfasts. We didn’t opt to make our own pancakes(something you can do there), but rather we opted for eggs benedicts, which we both enjoyed.

If you only go for the hilarious name alone ‘Slappy Cakes’ is well worth trying if you’re in need of breakfast in Shinjuku. We had a ball with the ‘Make you Own Pancakes’ option. Find Slappy Cakes on Floor 7 of Lumine Est in Shinjuku — NOT in Lumine 1 or 2 — Lumine Est is another part of the 3 part mega shopping centre which is kinda behind Lumine 2 if you come at it from the Shinjuku Station side. We went on a Saturday morning around 10:00am and were surprised to find there wasn’t really a line, we got seated right away. When you come in they ask you if you want to make your own or if you want to just order the pancakes — DOTHEMAKEYOUROWN, it’s so much fun! If you’re making your own they seat you at a table that has a hot plate in the middle where you’ll get to fry up your own pancake creations(you know like Korean BBQ but with breakfast food). The menu gives you three batter options — buttermilk, peanut butter(SOGOOD!) and buckwheat for making savoury pancakes. Then you choose your toppings, you can have as many as you want as they’re priced individually and there are so many options I can’t list them here — just see my photo. We went with 6 toppings, 3 each to share and both sweet batter mixes. The batter is delivered in squeezy bottles for ease along with your toppings and then you’re free to do as you wish — be as creative as you want. We had a lot of fun trying different shapes and topping combos — see photos for our artistic attempts. It doesn’t seem like a lot of food but we’d made about 4.5 pancakes each out of batter and had coffees to go with it and we were well full by the end of it.

Amazeballs! Seriously. Tried this place because we were craving pancakes and we were not disappointed! After lining up for all of 5 minutes we were seated at a table with a cook grill in the middle. Not really knowing what was going on, we over come some language barriers and got excited about making our own pancakes!!! You have three life changing decisions to be made. Batter. Fillings. Toppings. They have three batters options, buttermilk, whole grain and peanut butter. Then, about 12 different filling options, including savoury and sweet options. And finally delicious toppings, including a cream of the day! Everything is brought out in little serving dishes and you’re left to your imagination! The pancakes themselves were delicious and not only because I made them myself. All of the add ons and fillings were fresh and tasty. Service was great, typical of Japan! It was such a fun delicious and satisfying experience. I want it to open in Melbourne.

Worst pancakes I’ve ever had. Dry & crumbly, think they must’ve been stale. We wanted to share some pancakes for dessert as we’d eaten elsewhere, but they requested we each got a meal = two stacks of stale pancakes. I could make better at home. Bit of a rip off for coffee too @¥550 latte

I’ve been to Slappy Cakes a few times and always enjoy it. I don’t understand why it doesn’t get the crazy lines that the pancake shops in Harajuku get; I think this place is just as good, if not better. Last Monday I ordered butterscotch and apple pancakes and smoked salmon Eggs Benedict(I was feeling particularly gluttonous that day). I can’t remember the last time I had butterscotch, but it’s rare in Japan. The combination of the two things worked well; neither had a strong taste, but it was still enjoyable. I don’t think they were baked inside, but in between the layers(it was huge!). The Eggs Benedict was also great, but the nice thing was the price. I have been to some places with expensive Eggs Benedict, but this one tasted the same and was maybe half the price. It also came with potatoes. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use the self-grilling table(it’s always full) but that’s alright. I don’t know if I would trust my pancakes anyway. If you are shopping in Lumine and get hungry, I recommend this place.

Came here with my friend for an awesome birthday breakfast! We were on a schedule(had to catch the train to get to the owl café on time) so we weren’t able to cook our own pancakes, which I was a bit sad about because it’s definitely a unique aspect of this restaurant. The employees are super nice here, so we felt right at home. The menu has a bunch of options, but we decided on the Slappy Benedict(spinach, prosciutto, sundried tomatoes) and the blueberry pancakes with lemon curd. Service was fast because we were the first customers. The food was legit. The pancakes were perfectly cooked; soft and fluffy and delicious with the plain syrup. I didn’t care for the lemon curd but my friend liked it. The eggs benedict were really good too, and they came with some amazing potatoes which we devoured. Overall I was very pleased with the food and service. The waitresses were definitely on top of their game, especially when it came to filling up water(that’s always one of the things that people forget, but I drink a ton of water so it’s important to me lol). I would come back, and next time I’d like to cook my own pancakes! :D

My daughters and I visited Slappy Cakes Shinjuku on ¼/2015 while we were in Japan on vacation. We live in Dallas so the closet on to us is Portland and that’s a bit of a drive. Our first attempt to find it was New Year’s Day and we were unsuccesful because the website directions are not perfectly clear. There are 3 parts to the Lumine shopping center. Lumine 1, 2 and Est. Lumine 1 and 2 were closed for the holiday and we assumed we couldn’t get to the restaurant. It was later that day that we stumbled across Lumine Est and found Slappy Cakes. We vowed to return in a couple days. Once we finally found the place and returned for lunch on the 4th we were greeted warmly, as you are everywhere in Japan. The waitress that seated us actually spoke very good English, she had spent time in the states, San Francisco I believe. We chatted a bit and she told us how everything worked and recommended the proper size to make your pancakes. We had a table by a window so had a view of the tracks into Shinjuku station and the skyline in the area We order the buttermilk and peanut butter batter along with crumbled bacon, chocolate chips, chorizo, whipped cream, pecans as topping and a side of fried eggs. The batters cooked up into some tasty pancakes and we got very creative with our topping combos. We also ordered some of their specialty drinks, I can’t remember exactly and they were all tasty. I’m not sure if all of the locations operate the same, but this one you only have 90 minutes for your meal which was plenty of time. Definitely would like to see one of these in Dallas. Lucky me, I will be traveling through Maui next month and I’m sure my fiancée and I will try the Slappy Cakes located there.

A wonderful place! Don’t follow the Maps directions but when you find it on the 7th floor of Lumine Est you will enjoy it a lot, especially for homesick Americans!
