Oreno Pan sits just off busy Karasuma St. on side street. It is a charming, unassuming space with no seating but all breads are clearly displayed and labeled. They do both good soft Asian-style bread, but also hearty rustic breads, albeit in smaller portions. Both their Eastern and Western style breads are good and high quality. As it is a little difficult to find real, hearty bread in Japan, I really enjoyed their Cheese Walnut roll. Sounds like your average awesome bakery. But wait, there’s a twist. I’ve never seen this before, but when I brought my tray up to the register, they placed the tray on a platform. The platform somehow detected the shape of my roll, and added the appropriate charge to my bill. It was 7;30 am and I was a bit sleep deprived, but man was I amused. Also, I didn’t realize this before but this totally bumped Oreno Pan up on my list of favorite bakeries… they’re open at 7am!!! For whatever reason finding a bakery open before 10am with a decent selection has been a chore for me in Kyoto. I’m glad that is over and I now have my go-to early in the morning ^^

Most delicious, flaky western pastries in Kyoto. Definitely a must visit bakery if you like croissants, brioche, and etc. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Just like most of Japan, it is a cash only establishment. We didn’t have any cash but there was an atm at a nearby convenient store.

I happened upon this little shop wandering the streets near my hotel one morning, it has a small store front but the selection of pan/pastries was surprisingly abundant. I’m sorry I don’t recall specific names of individual items, but some that caught my attention were items such as a beef curry-filled pastry(it looked flakey, not like the normal curry donuts), azuki bean/green tea cubes, and a couple varieties of braided bread with bacon. I tried a braided bacon/pepper pastry and a vanilla melon pan, the bacon pan was nice and savory and the Mellon pan was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside, topped with a light crust of regular and powdered sugar. Not your typical melon pan but very delicious. It was about one block north of Karasuma station, there are at least four hotels In the nearby area but surprisingly I did not notice many eateries open early around here, this was a lucky find. Will drop by again next time I visit Kyoto! Update: My apologies, turns out I visited Oreno Pan Okamura which is as I said near Karasuma Station, didn’t realize there were other locations

We loved Oreno during our recent trip to Kyoto! This one was near our hotel so we picked up snacks to take with us during our temple/shrine tour and for our ride on the Shinkansen back to Tokyo. They have a wonderful selection of sweet(chocolate) and savory(hot dog, meat, pizza) pastries to pick from. Grab a little basket and choose. Yum! I miss you, Oreno!

Ore no pan! Very monopolizing sound! Ore no means my(manlike men use this expression), and pan means bread. I worked as a temporally staff member for a publishing company in the vicinity. Sometimes I bought some bread here after work. Near this boulangerie, another bakery stood, but the line of bread and atmosphere is a little different from each other. It didn’t look like competing respectively. Wooden door and green roof tent, very fashionable outward appearance! It looks like a boulangerie in Paris. In addition it doesn’t face a large busy street. Generally they are a little pricy because of its favored accessibility or location of business area, so I chose some reasonable bread carefully. Average price ranges from 200 to 400. I don’t want to pay more than 200 yen for each. The goods under 200 yen were limited to small or Danish ones. I gave up the most popular curry bread, whose dough is crispy and stuffed jam is high quality! The Danish were also nice, but not especially impressed me, I felt they were almost same as other shops. Probably I visited here after work, approximately 17:30. It closes at 18:30. Therefore almost all the popular bread was unfortunately sold out. As is often the case with everything, if you want to have something awesome, you should come to the shop in early time.
