Masutani serves fatty shoyu style ramen or the so-called authentic Kyoto style ramen. The main shop is in the Ginkakuji area they say and has been in Kyoto for quite some time. The broth is made up with thick shoyu and with lots of pork back-fat floating on top. You can actually pick the degree of ramen firmness and soup fattiness. I just ordered the regular kind. It came with a Chinese style soup bowl. The ramen itself are thin, straight, springy and easy to slurp. The three pieces of chashu were mediocre. Nothing special about this ramen shop. Would I go again? May be! Should you go try? Only if you like fatty shoyu broth or Kyoto style ramen. Masutani is located at the Kyoto Ramen Koji. Getting there is easy. It is on the 10th floor of the Kyoto Isetan Department store inside the JR Kyoto Station. It closes at 10 pm daily and last call is 9:30 pm.
