Jolly Pasta is part of the corporation that owned Sunday Sun diners back in the day, with over 250 locations across Japan. The this pasta diner chain is known for having excellent quality, perfectly cooked pasta, low prices, soda bar, delicious seafood, and delicious pizza covered in cheese. In other East Asian countries cheese is ridiculously expensive— For example: In South Korea a pizza is 3600 yen($ 36.00USD/36,000won)!!! Also, at some pizza chains in Japan, like MR. Pizza, I have seen a 2200yen pizza($ 22USD). However, at Jolly Pasta, even a better quality pizza is half the price. Coming from America, where most pasta is around 1500 yen($ 15.00USD) a plate, Jolly Pasta is shockingly inexpensive for the quality and quantity. We ordered a large plate of perfectly cooked al dente spaghetti with fresh garlicky tomato sauce and bacon for only 590 yen($ 5.87USD), seriously!!! Why is pasta so cheap in Japan? It is not fair. I have said before in other reviews that Japanese diners are great quality and low prices. Jolly Pasta is no exception. I almost feel guilty only paying the prices that they charge, and in Japan there is no tipping either. The special at the time that I tried was a cold cream pasta covered in sautéed scallops, uni(sea urchin), king crab, squid, and fish row. I was shocked at the quality of this dish and the freshness of the seafood. But, it is Japan after all, so everything is of high standard. There are three things that you should always order when eating at Jolly: 1. Gratin Chowder — Dish of hot seafood cream chowder, covered in a puffed baked bread topping. Cracking the bread open and all the steam comes out is my favorite experience. The chowder is no joke, with huge clams simmered in cream and white wine. 2. Sautéed Spinach with Bacon — Goes perfectly with all of the creamy dishes consumed, to make you feel a little healthier. 3. Drink Bar — Drink copious amounts of free Green Melon Soda refills. Jolly Pasta is perfect for tourists, filled with many happy Japanese families stuffing their faces with deliciusly cheap pizza. This specific location is on stilts, with an attached Big Boy restaurant in the same plaza.
