Located right next to(connected through the back door actually) Kyoto’s botanical garden, In the Green has one of the best settings in the city and a nice open atmosphere, especially if you can snag a seat on the terrace. It runs parallel to a large road on one side, but the background music and walls seem to drown most of it out, leaving you mostly with the tranquil surroundings of the garden. Although not a huge selection of items on the menu, i’ve been here a few times and always found the food very reasonably priced for what you get. Their lunch sets, around 1000 yen from what i remember, generally include soup, salad, and bread, with mains consisting of pizza, sandwiches, salads, and usually a meat or fish dish. I can personally speak to the quality of people working here too, including the wonderful owner, after holding a very special event, for which they prepared an extra special menu that everyone loved. One recommendation: In the green is very popular on weekends, and often closed for private functions. Call ahead, or go with the expectation that you may have to wait or be turned away due to a private party.

Came on a normal Friday afternoon quite late– around 2:15pm. Still had to wait a little. This place is obviously quite popular and well known. Pizza seemed to be the popular choice but I was craving fish and chips, so I got that. The fish comes in one large piece, perfectly crispy. The batter wasn’t too thick and was very airy, with many small air bubbles– like the bubbles in spongecake. The fries were pretty standard, like McDonald’s fries, fish and chips also comes with greens, a small cup of soup, and bread, all of which were pretty standard. What was awesome was that it came with warm ketchup and a tartar sauce with shiso. Fish and chip craving: satisfied. Because I traveled a good 45 min to get here, I figured I’d get some dessert as well. I decided on the Chocolate Angel Food Cake which was fantastic. It’s actually not solid chocolate cake, but more of a regular vanilla chocolate marble. This made it pull apart in such a fun way, and it was topped beautifully with a giant mound of fresh whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and crushed nuts. Needless to say I devoured the delicious thing, though those less of a glutton than I may choose to split it among two diners. My total bill came to 1572, not bad for a filling meal and giant dessert. In The Green is located right next to Kitayama station, and next to the entrance of the Kyoto Botanical Garden. If you come when the weather is decent, or when flowers are in bloom, I’m sure the terrace seating would be in high demand, so plan ahead. It’s a rather large restaurant so it’s good for groups and events. The diners seemed to vary, from small children to the elderly. It’s a very family friendly restaurant with something for everyone.
