Good in the fact that they offer several local microbrews, but the prices are outrageous! 1200 yen for a pint. Thus only 3 stars.

This place has a pub feel but it’s definitely one of the cleanest pubs I’ve ever stepped into in my life. There’s a great selection of craft beers to choose from(Kyoto Brewing Company is the local one). We also ordered some food. The pasta was so nice — simple and seasoned perfectly. We also got and order of the potato fries/chips and it’s a huge portion.

After a day of walking for miles and miles to see the many Kyoto sites we sought out a craft beer bar on Unilocal and like a shining beacon of beer heaven this place appeared on the map not to far from us. Exhausted when we arrived I was pleased to find a really cool bar doing craft beer and light snacks. We decided just to drink though and chatted with staff to find what local beers were on offer. They were really friendly and brought out the different bottles on offer for us to pick one. Predictable as ever I selected a lovely bottle of IPA. The pub is nice, it is trying to be Irish in style, but it’s a bit confused and that’s a good thing for me as I don’t really love Irish themed bars. The food looked good and rustic. Things like sausage platters are the order of the day. There is also a open beer garden out back if you are lucky enough to have some sunshine. Good bar, worth a look if your in the area.

Good selection of beer. Nice little patio in the back. Had the IPA and it was quite good. Didn’t get to try the food but it’s a nice spot to grab a beer and hang out with friends. They have English speaking staff which is great!

Mr Tadg’s is the dog’s bollox. Nice little craft brew bar with rotating craft beers on-tap. Tried the Amber Ale from Shuzankaido, Kyoto during my visit. A Japanese ale reminiscent of Anchor Steam, although a little darker, and served at the perfect temperature. The front bar is smoke-free and those who partake of tobacco have the cute little garden out back.

Awesome place to enjoy quality craft beer in Kyoto. Irish themed restaurant pub, but they actually focus on selections from Japanese microbreweries. In fact, I do not remember seeing any imported beers on tap. ATMOSPHERE: Joyful. We ended up chatting quite a bit with two people that were sitting next to us. It is that kind of friendly environment. I also really liked their patio seating. Although we went on a cold January night, since the patio had a covered roof, it felt warm. FOOD: We visited here after our meal, so the only item we tried was their fish and chips. Quality was excellent. They battered it the right way. No «panko» on these fish&chips. I also liked the fresh cut potatoes used for their fries. SPENT: 3600 Yen for two of us. We each had two small beers and we shared a plate of fish and chips. Not bad. SMOKING: Non smoking. A bar that is non-smoking is hard to find in Japan, so it was a treat for me. NEGATIVE: They only had one(unisex) bathroom for the entire place. CONCLUSION: A great find. Enjoying delicious beer here made my day. Would this place receive 5 stars if it was in Tokyo? Perhaps not, since there are so many awesome craftbeer specialty pubs in Tokyo, maybe Tadg’s would not stand out. In Kyoto, there are too many so called beer pubs that only has the usual suspects(Guiness, Heinekin, Hartland, etc) in draft.

A quaint little Irish-themed(note: «gastropub» and not«Irish Pub») named after Irish owner, Mr. Tadg(pronounced Tie-gh). Allow me to defend my selfish nomenclature for this establishment: 1. Unlike most Irish Pubs, you’re not inundated by mindless chatter and/or drunken yelling from college students, seasoned alcoholics, tourists, or all of the above, the moment you step into the establishment. 2. I can traverse the establishment with relative ease and without worry that the floors are sticky with spilled alcohol and/or piss. 3. Instead of going for the InBev/SABMiller inspired«Irish» choices,(e.g. Harp, Guiness, Smithwicks), Mr. Tadg wisely offers a well-curated selection of ji-beer from around the archipelago, paired with Irish(finger)food classics with a touch of local flavors from around the Old Capital. An absolutely charming establishment for a quick drink and perhaps a meal if you’re feeling a bit peckish. Actually the atmosphere here is ambient enough that you could probably even study or write the next Great Japanese Novel here without much bother from your fellow(wo)man. The clientele here seem to be local expats and ji-beer enthusiasts, making this quite possibly the most Irish non-«Irish Pub» establishment I’ve ever been to. Do stop by and stretch your tired feet here after a long afternoon of walking around/shopping in the Shijo/Kawaramachi area. Sláinte!

Tasty selection of Japanese microbrews, served in pint glasses from international craft brewers. No smoking inside(which I appreciate), with a covered smoking area in back. Most of the staff is bilingual and they’re all super friendly. Wifi via Freespot if you register your email.
