A bit disappointed by Kameya. The food was not so great and tasted funny, like not Japanese-funny but bad-smell-funny. Adding the bitter taste, it was too much for me to handle, and I was not willing to order anything new at this place, being dissatisfied by it. And anyway, portions are quite small even if you eat all of it. So I left quite hungry. Also, one of the few places in Japan where I felt like they were having a lot of tourists over — mainly tourists actually. So if you are looking for something authentic, this is not the place. We were seated at a Western-style table because there were only two of us — too bad, there were low tables(Japanese-style) available, but they were keeping them for a more important group of tourists. I felt like I wasted my money. Plus I did not like the room in itself, it felt old and dirty. Please do me a favor, do not trust the guidebooks and go somewhere else during your trip to Nara.

Good thing about Kameya is that it’s next to the Kofuku-ji Temple, so it should be an excellent meal stop if you are coming back from the Nara Park to the train station. Other than that, there’s nothing worth praising about this restaurant. This restaurant left a bad first impression with its rude staff who immediately grew cold when he realized that we didn’t speak Japanese and asked for the English menu. I never had an okonomiyaki, an Osaka specialty, so I thought I would try it out here so I can compare it to the real deal when I go to Osaka in a few hours. At that moment, I thought it was rather mediocre and couldn’t see the hype about okonomiyaki. Kameya’s okonomiyaki was basically a small vegetable pancake, which I thought was it until I had the real deal in Osaka which was a made-on-the-spot batter with lettuce and beaten egg topped with delicious sauce. Kameya’s was also more than expensive than Osaka’s, costing more than 900 yen even as lunch special for a portion that is significantly smaller than Osaka’s. Absolutely pathetic excuse for an okonomiyaki coupled with rude attitude. You are better off saving your time and money eating at the Family Mart nearby.

Alright so were hungry and looking for a place to eat. So we end up in this restaurant thinking ok when you hungry you eat anything even form a place that looked like it is only meant for tourists Boy where we wrong. First of all our witer spoke English — Big Bonus — and the food was simply really good and of good quality. The menu was very diverse and you could pick out a variety of things. From Okonomiyaki with various different ingredients to shushi and sasimi All of these server in the traditional way and with a smile. I would definitely recommend the place
