Yakitori is another great Japanese specialty restaurant rarely found outside Japan and like sushi has its roots in stand-up food stalls. Toriyoshi is a high-end place with delicious ingredients and still maintaining the artisan spirit. They aren’t angry, they’re just too busy practicing their art to give you more than a few seconds of their attention. Like any Yakitori restaurant they serve every imaginable part of the chicken grilled in front of you on skewers. Toriyoshi also has a good selection of seasonal vegetables also served grilled on skewers. There are 2 ordering styles. You can order a la carte from the menu on the wall(Japanese only). The recommended alternative is called omakase(leave it up to the chef’s choice). The omakase course here doesn’t have a set number of items, but rather they keep bringing more until you tell them to stop and you pay based on the number you have eaten. This is the best to get season specialities and try something new. This won’t be an easy restaurant for non-Japanese speakers, but given the neighborhood, Toriyoshi is no stranger to non-Japanese. The restaurant is usually full but turnover is quick so you won’t have to wait long. Go with the Omakase and you will enjoy it. Expect to pay around JPY5,000 to 7,000 per person.
