The one and the only Tonkatsu specialty restaurant in Azabujuban. Tonkatsu(pork cutlet) is now one of the staple foods of Japanese culture. So, someone please explain to me why there is only ONE tonkatsu shop in my neighborhood? Sure, there are Yoshoku(Japanized Western food) restaurants that also serves tonkatsu, but Muranaka is the only place that specializes in it. Foodies might laugh at me, but I like Tonkatsu Wako(a Tonkatsu national chain with over 250 locations all over Japan). But in Azabu-Juban, we have no Wako, no Saboten, not even Katsuya. So, I have no choice but to hit Muranaka when ever I crave for katsu. Now, their quality is very good. However, their tonkatsu is not my favorite style. It is hard to describe in words, but just try Wako and compare it to this place. It is different, and I like Wako’s style more. For that reason, when I come here, I don’t get Tonkatsu. I go for their mixed fry set or Kaki-fry(fried oysters when it is in season). I also enjoy their fried fish. SIDEITEMS: During lunch hours, rice and miso soup is free refills. However, their cabbage is not. At Wako, they give you unlimited cabbage, so that is another reason I like Wako more. Also, Muranaka does not have a separate dressing for cabbage. You are supposed to use Tonkatsu sauce for cabbage, which is not my style. LUNCHPRICE: 980 Yen on any of the 6 lunch sets. For sure a better deal than their dinner prices. They pretty much double their prices for dinner.
