Hadn’t had soba in Japan yet do I looked for one on Unilocal and I’m glad I did. What drew me to this place besides the extremely positive reviews was that several reviews stated the owner was very hospitable, personable, and speaks really good English. The reviews were spot on, he was really cool and it was nice talking to him. He also explained to me, a soba newbie, on what exactly to do to eat it properly. As for the food, I went for the slightly expensive soba with a special duck dipping sauce that he recommended. He also recommended the plain soba that most people get, but I this dipping sauce was intriguing. By the time I tried it, I was amazed. It was extremely rich and matched the perfectly made soba very nicely. I’m not much of a soba aficionado, but I could tell went this place was popular. I also really enjoyed drinking the leftover sauce(adding water to suit your saltiness threshold). I’m definitely coming back here again!

Amazing place. Come early if you do not have a reservation. English menu. Duck appetizer and duck Udon were incredible!

I love the place. Nice soba noodle made 100% soba soba flour, no wheat flour. Friendly and courteous. Good choice of Sake and wine too.

A Michelin-rated soba joint with impeccably friendly service and amazing food for lunch and dinner. Where else can you have a Michelin-starred lunch for $ 10? Honmura An is one of my favorite restaurants in Tokyo. They do everything so well — especially the soba. Soba is an art to do well. Since it doesn’t use flour, it’s very difficult to make soba to the right consistency. The dipping sauce here is also so well balanced compared to other places I’ve been in Japan. My favorite soba dishes here are the Zaru(with simple seaweed on top) and the Duck(served with a rich duck broth). Also don’t miss their dinner if you have the chance. It’s done tapas-style with such sophistication that you can taste the quality of their ingredients. Reservations are needed for dinner, and their dinner ends early. For lunch, skip the lunch rush, which starts around 12 – 12:30. There are many soba restaurants in Japan, but this one takes the cake for me because of their quality, service, and English-friendly menus and staff. If you need a quick guide on how to eat soba:

Bottom line at the top: either the best or second best soba I had in Tokyo. Honmura-an is a must visit if you are in Roppongi or Akasaka, or are working in Mori Tower. – Came here for lunch in 2011 while I was interning in the Mori Tower in Roppongi. This soba is the real deal and they also have fresh wasabi that they grate for you seconds before serving and it is seriously life changing. Like my boss and I almost started crying but it was so good hahaha. Anyways the soba has a good amount if bite to it and is just slightly nutty. They have great lunch sets too so this is the perfect spot for a quick power lunch. Chef used to have a spot in NYC but from what I understand he closed it to move back to Japan. When I went they were closed Mondays and certain Tuesdays so your best bet is to check ahead of time or go in the second half of the week.
