Not cheap by any means, but every now and again you must TREATYOSELF. I went to see Bernhoft, and got the recommended whiskey drink, and it was SOGOOD. Bernhoft was incredible, and I was supremely under dressed, but I had an incredible night listening to good music. Also there was a dude dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and slacks, and that was entertaining to me since he looked like a tourist in Hawaii.

I am a big fan of jazz bars, and used to be a member(and weekly patron) of Ronnie Scott’s when I lived in London. This place though is like rather too many ‘jazz bars’ in Japan, in that it has rather lost the meaning of the latter word. It of course depends on what it being performed, but generally it’s a bit too much like a concert hall, where you’re expected to sit in silence for the duration of the show, and leave shortly after it ends. The food is average yet(as you would expect) very over-priced, as unfortunately is the venue overall I would say. That said, it is a popular place, so fair enough I suppose(supply and demand really). The music is of course excellent, and you’re unlikely to be disappointed in that respect. Overall, this isn’t really a jazz bar, it’s a venue for live jazz, where you can eat and drink(very quietly) while watching. If you’re after a jazz bar, there are much cheaper and better alternatives in and around Tokyo.

Obviously, it won’t be a cheap night out. The tickets to get in is for the show but drinks and food are separate. It is definitely worth every yen for the music but I can’t really say the same for the food. It’s pricy yet it’s really not that special. I guess you can’t expect much because it’s music you’re there for but still, if you can’t manage something decent then I rather you just serve fries and sausages. Here’s my tip: 1. eat before you go and just enjoy nibbles and the drinks while you enjoy the show. 2. get there a littler earlier to get a good seat up the front. Food aside, you’ll be sure to have a lovely night at this intimate jazz bar.
