Thank you, Nik, for the tip at Ginza Station A1! Basically, I have had a lot of great mochi. But the mochi at Ginza Akebono is so delicious! They didn’t have the ichigo daifuku because it was sold out; even without the strawberry, the red bean mochi was delicious. It was 216 yen. The mochi was slightly sticky but not chewy; the outside was covered with a leaf. Definitelyc heck out this mochi!

just remember, ginza station exit A1! once you surface, the confectionery shop will be waiting for you on your left! here the treasure that awaits you is not just a simple mochi but a daifuku. a soft round rice cake of gel like consistency stuffed with a sweet filling. the basic stuffing is sweet red beans, mashed or whole. then comes seasonal treats like apricots, chestnuts, sakura but my all time favourite has to be ichigo daifuku, a whole strawberry surrounded by sweet mashed red beans encased in a delicate yet chewy mochi skin. that very first bite will have you purring for more as the fresh strawberry juice explodes in your mouth! next remember, 2pm is the magic time to come, that’s when the fresh shipment of ichigo daifuku arrives each day! perfect for that after lunch treat. best when eaten there and then. always recommended to be consumed within 2 hours. but tried and tested to withstand a flight from tokyo to SG, just make sure that it is lightly chilled enroute, aka stuffed safely in your check in bag. avoid storing in the fridge as it is way too harsh, making the mochi tough and lose it’s elasticity. once finished, it’s back to square one. just remember, ginza station exit A1!

A must-try when in Tokyo. All of their mochi – glutinous rice cakes – are delicious and made with high quality ingredients. I tried a firm & sweet one with red beans, a soft & savory one made of «kusa» grass, and a savory white one, all of which were recommended by the SA. Delicious! Plus everything is beautifully presented and make great gifts.
